long file names

My scan disk log shows this for many files and Java is not opening. Can this be fixed ?

folder could not be opened in MS-DOS mode because its complete short name
was longer than 66 characters.
Resolution: Ignore this error and continue
Results: Error was corrected as specified above.

There's nothing you can do about it while in MS-DOS mode. That is why it is recommended to use the protected mode version of scandisk from Windows, rather than the DOS version. Do the same errors show up when the protected mode version of scandisk is used? If so, you might try re-installing the Java software.

Thank you for this.
Yes I get the problem when using the protected form of scandisk so I shall have to reinstall java. I cant see where the uninstall file is -- I assume there is one?

There should be an Uninstall entry under Add/Remove Programs list with the version number of Sun Java you last installed. I get best results by downloading the stand alone Sun Java installer and installing Sun Java offline. And that way, I can reinstall anytime I want too.

Scandisk log can NOT be fixed as there is nothing wrong with having a path longer than 66 characters in Windows. DO NOT try to fix this issue, it's a big can of nasty worms.
