how do i get the log on screen with the list of users without typing the user name but just the password

There is a tool avalible that can allow you to perform an automatic login under windows 9x.
It is called "Tweakui" (search on google for it) and the latest version for windows 98 is 1.33.

Once you have installed it, there should be tab labelled "Logon". There you will be able to specify if you want automatic login enabled and the account to log onto.
