i have an adaptec 2940 UW card with onboard bios ver 1.16 (i think) and i've had this problem for quite some time. I also have an IBM SCSI HD. My problem occurs when I try to run a network card and the scsi card in the same system. there are no IRQ conflicts, DMA conflicts, SCSI ID conflicts, Address Conflicts or any sort of conventional conflicts. i suspect I may need a firmware upgrade for the SCSI card. Over the years from system to system i have tried to get my computer running with this SCSI card and SCSI HD but it just wont work. i have even tried turning off the IDE controllers. The SCSI card is the only constant, i have tried it with different motherboard, and everything. It seems to only matter when I try to use an ISA network card. when I run everything PCI based (including my netcard) i can get everything to work. if anyone could help i thank you very much. i do not think this has had a simple answer

Simple answer::Don't use an ISA network card; use a PCI. If it works why screw with it?
Hope this helps.. Ely Tillery

First question , try it without net card does it work ok? Is this network card 10 Base 2(coax)? if so is a 'T' connector and terminated cable attached to the card? what IRQ and base I/o are being used by net card and adaptec 2940?

the SCSI card is PCI so the resources are automatically assigned but I have messed with the priortities and put it on different irqs and stuff but still the same. It doesnt lockup without the netcard. I am absolutly sure it has something to do with the SCSI card. Its a 10 base T network and the wiring is OK because it works with the PCI network card. I would use all PCI cards but the thing with that is i dont have enough slots. i have tried putting the netcard on varios addresses, first 300, and then 280, and 2A0 and played with the IRQs. i have even disabled the printer port and the serial ports and used those IRQs. Windows says there are no conflicts and I get no yellow circles or anything.

you may have a pci-isa bridge problem. try deleting the bridge in the system profile and reboot.
