Am I able to not install ie5 when loading win 98se to save space?

How about online services? Is there a way to not install that to save space? I have unchecked the box when loading win 98 b4 but it still loads.

Instead of loading ie 5, is it possible to load ie 6 instead?

My laptop is set up with a partitioned small drive on a P 133. One of the original laptops.

So.... I have win 98 on the partitioned drive and use the floppy to reinstall with the bootdisk program.

There is no box to uncheck for the ie 5 install, only outlook express. Is there any tricks that can be learnt to save space but still have the same working o/s?

Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel
Double Click the Add/Remove Programs TAB
Click the Windows Setup TAB
Uncheck Accessibility
Work through each area and uncheck what Items
you don’t use and it will uninstall those features.

If you are willing to risk running IEradicator (plenty of success stories around on forums) then you could put Firefox in instead. That way you'll have no link between IE & Windows which will improve reliability too.

Alternatively there is something out there called "Win98 Lite" which is paired down to very small proportions and could be worth considering.

"is it possible to load ie 6 instead?"

That's even more bloated than it's predecessor - how small of a drive is this? It'd have to be darn near microscopic if space is at such a premium.

Face it, you need a larger drive

Is the partitioning essential?

yeah Derek

the partition is essential so that if and when I need different programs for different tasks , all I have to do is but the floppy in and reload my o/s.

Different tasks require different programs and there is too much wasted space every time I load/unload programs over and over.

Yeah, I know it is time to get a new laptop.

I know what I want, just waiting for one that will meet my needs.

It is like back in the 80's when we payed the same amount for a atari 2600 for the same price as a PS2 today. Know what I mean?

98Lite is possibly the best thing you could use. Especially if you use it to install 98. However for all functions you must purchase the product, but the free version allows you to strip IE 5 off, replace the interface with that of 95 (4.00.950 or 4.00.950 A you must have a copy of the software files are not included) but the shell functions of intergrated IE will not work properly. Such as Winrar 3.x range. Seriously tho jboy is right you need a bigger drive.

The eighties are over (I'm pretty sure)

Apparently the capacity of the drive shall remain a secret

If things are that cramped, the bare bones Win95 upgrade would likely be a better fit, and IE not much of an issue - - or, you could opt for drive compression (I imagine this is a FAT16 drive) - you'll have more 'room' but performance would drop to a crawl

Hi, Yep, ONLINE SERVICES will will load no matter what you do. Just search (FIND) for it and delete any mention of it.

JimPIM & Sluytman

I wouldn't advocate using Find then deleting stuff in order to remove Online Services. In fact I generally discourage this sort of thing unless it is aboslutely essential.

You need to properly uninstall this feature by going to Control Panel/Add-Remove Programs/Windows/Setup where you will find the entry. Unless you do this you are liable to leave unwanted registry entries intact.

Sure, if any Online Services folders/files are still kicking around afterwards then delete them by all means. Make sure you don't delete something you shouldn't though or this is what happens:

PIM's Win98 computer (assuming he's ever used Win9x) doubtless still has the training wheels on it
