Comment:

I am trying to install a Linksys wireless g notebook adapter. My system is not completing the software install. (it does recongnize that the card is in the slot). I get the "double beep" at start up (normally get only a single beep - I guess that is a bios warning), getting a "Regsvr32 error on "ODSERVICE.DLL" (which I think is the Funk Software/Odyssey program for LAN security), and I have also got the following error: "10093:Successful WSAStartup not yet performed". Anyone have any ideas for installing this card on W98SE? Thanks a bunch for all the help!!

The requirements say it will work with W98SE, which is what is operating on this machine. Thanks...

The double beep indicates that something has changed. This is probably the presence of the wireless card.

Often you need to install the drivers before installing the card. Have a closer look at the instructions that came with it.

Rimfire - you're still at it...you have helped me out before!! Anyway, I think I have all the required drivers and files installed. I have tried to uninstall then reinstall, but have not been able to get the installation to "take" in the system, without getting the aformentioned errors. How do I trouble shoot the drivers and presence of all the required .dll files, etc? Thanks!

That almost sounds accusing!

The error message you posted might be caused by an incompatible winsock.dll or an incorrectly installed network component.

The first place to look would be device manager. If the wireless network card is shown as having errors. Remove the card, delete the entry and reboot. Wait until after windows is up and running before use reinsert the card. For other readers, ths is a PC card on a laptop, please don't try this with an internal card.

If the device is shown as working, you may need to check in networking in control panel. Let's see what device manager has to say first.

Rimfire - I really do mean you helped me before, I appreciate it.

On to wireless card problem. The device manager shows the card as working. And the card shows up on the network under the configuration tab..interestingly 2x as a)an adapter, b)a IPX Protocol and c)a TCP/IP.

By the way, another symptom (to what I mentioned above) is that I get a runtime error on the adpater .exe at startup. Which may also explain why the card has never fully installed.

Thanks for your ideas and support!

Enoughalready,

Make sure you have installed both the Netlink software and hardware in the proper order. Only after you have turned off all A/V software, Firewall or any popup blocker to install the new software.

Make sure you see the Wireless Card in the network configuration. Configure it to TCP/IP, and match it to what ever your wireless access port is set to. Suggest you turn off any Wireless Security on the AP.

If your seeing a modem and/or a network card (intergrated), you will need to go to each ones Properites and check the 'Disable in this Profile' box. For some reason Win98 seems to default to the network card before seeing anything attached to that slot.

Then reboot and it might take you uninstalling and reinstalling the Netlink software. Also do reload the network drivers when your asked for them off the Win 98SE disk on reload.

Let us know how you made out.

Cheers

Did you say that the card appears twice? This could be the problem. Delete both instances and reboot. Windows should find the card and configure the drivers.

OS and Rimfire - Thanks so much for both of your comments - please review the following procedure I have followed: 1) I uninstalled the card/drivers, 2) Performed a fresh install (by the way I do have Norton A/V installed) 3)restarted and got the same series of requests and errors - as follows: a) request for "inetmib1.dll" (which I direct the set up to find the file in Windows folder - all the others have been installed already in the System folder), b) "vip.386" set up tells me that the file on system is newer that what will be installed so I tell it to keep the new version, c) Regsvr32 error - "caused exception c06d007eh in module ODSERVICE.DLL at 017f:100948be", d) runtime error - WPC54CFG.exe abnormal program termination (I think this is the adapter utility/configuration program that sets up the adapter after install?), 3) After start up and those error messages, I do see the card in the device manager and it does show it as working. It also shows it under the Network manager. But card is still not fully installed - especially that WPC54CFG.exe program which would allow me to configure the card to my network? What am I missing?? Sorry to keep bugging you guys on this....

enoughalready, I had a similar problem trying to install a pesky NIC on a Win98SE laptop. Anything that I did thru Device Manager failed to work. This may or may not help you, but here's what worked for me:

Remove all instances of the Network Card in Device Manager, but don't reboot. Next go into Network>Properties>Add>Adapter>Have Disk. Direct Setup to the driver location. "OK" your way out & reboot.
