Hi Rod, Tufenuf, hello everyone,

The most common cause I have seen is an incorrect version of oleaut32.dll.

Check your version:

Click on Start, Find, Files or Folders.
Type oleaut32.dll next to Named:
Ensure C: is next to Look In:.
Click on Find Now.

Right click on the file and select Properties
Click on the Version tab.

The version you should have with Win98 using IE6.0 is 2.40.4518.

I can either send you the correct version if it is wrong or you could run the mcrepair.exe as it will replace oleaut32.dll with the correct version.

Best Regards,
Mesich

Mesich,
Thank you. I used your suggestion and ran the mcrepair.exe program. I'm not sure what it did, but the repair was successful.

Hi busterbaggins, hello everyone,

Glad to hear everything worked out for you.

The Mcrepair.exe replaces the WinXP version of oleaut32.dll with the correct version for Win98 and IE 6.0.

Best Regards,
Mesich

I tried the Mcrepair.exe, but it did not work for me. I have Winxp and use internet explorer 6. Its strange i have the same problems with tryin to open up another window, but also it changes my homepage to some space-search.com or something. I change it but when i open up my internet explorer it changes it back to that website. Also i get some strange script error. The rest of my comp dosnt seem to be affected at all past the freeze up. If i dont use the net nothing freezes. Just started this morning, whats goin on.

Hi everyone,

I do not recommend running the mcrepair.exe on a computer with WinXP.

Mcrepair.exe was created originally for a fix with Microsoft Money. What it does is replace 4 files with the following versions.

Asycfilt.dll (2.40.4515)
Oleaut32.dll (2.40.4515)
Stdole2.tlb (2.40.4515
Olepro32.dll (5.0.4515)

These are the correct versions for Win98. The problem in opening a new window in Win98 running IE 6.0 is normally an incorrect version of Oleaut32.dll. This is why the mcrepair.exe works for Win98.

Those are not the correct versions for WinXP which is why I do not recommend using it.
Here is the correct versions for WinXP:

Asycfilt.dll (3.50.5014.0)
Oleaut32.dll (3.50.5014.0)
Stdole2.tlb (2.10.3027.1)
Olepro32.dll (5.0.5014)

If you have ran the mcrepair.exe on WinXP I would suggest you first replace the files with the correct version and register the .dll files. Might be just as easy to run the Repair Option in WinXP.

Have you tried all of the resolutions in the link provided by Tufenuf?

The issue with you homepage changing is most likely spyware.

Download, update and then run Spybot.

It would be best if you post in the WinXP forum as the fixes you may find here in the Win9x forum probably won't work or may cause more problems.

Best Regards,
Mesich
