it stands for set version. Some older programs were designed for older versions of microsoft products, and this allows for backwards compatability. It comes in handy if you used a version of backup that isnt currently on your computer. eg. win 95 backup on a win98 system. You can put rem in front of it to disable it. I have never needed it but it only take a minor amount of memory and you never know it may come in handy.
