The copy of Win98 I use is from an upgrade CD, I have done many installations. The dialogue that comes up early in the installation states that you need to provide verification of having either Windows 3.1, Windows for Workgroups, or Windows 95 before the upgrade Win98 CD will install. NOTE: it is exactly the same as the "New install" CD, except for the setup program requiring this verification. But, you are requested by the dialogue to DIRECT windows setup to where the verifiying software can be found. The DEFAULT is A:, which is why it is demanding you "insert disk 1", but you can re-direct it to another source, such as a Windows 95 CD. You should have been able to just run the setup from the computer with Window 95 on it and Win98 setup should have found the qualifying software on the C: drive when it checked it out, and then proceed to "upgrade" it to Windows 98SE.

If you don't have any of the qualifying software available, then you might try reading some of the "tips" that this guy provides:
http://www.mdgx.com/
It's rather tedious to dig through this guy's "tips", but he has a couple of ones titled, "WIN98: NO INSTALL CODE!" and "98 INSTALL BLUES" which describe procedures which supposedly allow installing with an upgrade CD without having to provide proof of qualifying software.

If 95 is running OK then from the desktop all you need to do is pop the upgrade cd in the cdrom, let it autostart and then do the installation.

hi,
try this
copy the win98 directory of the cd to your hard disk, lets say it is now available as c:\win98
start with a boot disk and go into the c:\win98 directory
i.e. at the DOS prompt first type c: and press enter
then type cd c:\win98 and press enter
now type the following command and press enter
extract /e precopy2.cab setuppp.inf

next type edit setuppp.inf and press enter
now the file setuppp.inf should have been opened up in the edit program

search for line containing ProductType
edit it so that it reads "ProductType=9" (no qoutes)
save changes and close the edit program
now start the setup from the DOS prompt and hopefully you should be able to complete the installation without hassle

please post back to let us know of your progress

i've switched to Linux!

Is your upgrade CD bootable? I seem to recall that not all (if any....) are?

http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/win98/...

is one of numerrous how sites out there re' using a '98 upgrade CD on a blank drive; and also the conventional upgrade path (from within an installed OS).

You can follow either model; a blank disk etc, or re-install 95 then pop in the 98 upgrade CD, when booted into '95, and let it do the rest for you - more or less automatically?

As you will see from the above typical link/how to... you will need a '98 bootdisk if you start from scratch (using the '98 cd and no pre-installed OS). Such items can be found as an image at bootdisk.com. Download the 98SE image - with cdrom drivers and also format and Fdisk utils included (useful to have them there already) - save to a hard drive; expand to a floppy and use that floppy.

And this excellent site (amazed it's still around...) is also useful to check out; covers more than a few things yiou may like/need to know etc...

That is a very interesting post from 'abdul ahad'. I'd never heard of that, I AM going to try that someday. I have read some rather convoluted descriptions of techniques for getting a Win98 upgrade disk to install without requiring the "qualifying product", but "abdul's" post presents a very simple procedure. From what his post claims, Windows 98 Setup will supposedly use the setuppp.inf file which has been extracted, edited, and left outside of the precopy2.cab, rather than the unedited version which will still be INSIDE the precopy2.cab. I'm not sure I believe it, but I WILL try it someday.

By the way, if this is true, then all that's really needed is a copy of the setuppp.inf file from Win98's precopy2.cab. Rather than messing with trying to edit it from DOS from the C:/Win98 directory on a hard drive you intend to install it, just edit a copy and then copy it to that directory before installation. For example, I have the Win98 directory files on my computer. I just extracted the setuppp.inf file and put it on my desktop. It's just a text file and the line that needs to be edited is a little bit past the middle of the file (there's 735 lines and it's on line 456). It looks like this:

ProductType=2
UPI=79469-XXX-XXXXXXX

(This is from the setuppp.inf from a Windows 98 upgrade CD) If "abdul" is right, then all that needs to be done is to change the "2" to a "9" and save the file. You could extract this file from the CD on another computer (even using XP, or whatever) and put the edited copy on a floppy disk.

This technique would work very well with the method I always use to do a "clean install" of Win98. I use the 98lite preview from:
http://www.litepc.com/
which requires copying the Win98 directory from the CD to the hard drive anyway. In this case I would just copy the files manually before running 98lite and either edit the file as described by "abdul", or copy a pre-edited file to the "98setup" directory.

There are various approaches that involve a dummy file which satisfies 98 upgrade CD setup requiremnts. They're dotted all over the www - or where in days of yore...

In this current scenario it would be far easier to adopt a re-install of 95 and follow a standard '98 upgrade routine (run the cd from within 95 itself); or use a '98 boot-disk, accecs the CD and and run setup etc...; and when it asks for proof of compliant OS, swap out the 98CD for the '95 CD; afterwhich restore the '98 when appropriate. One can also use the first floppy from win3x or '95 (if one has the '95 floppie set - all 13 of them I think it was...)?

Much of this in the link(s) I posted earlier...; and I think the Bob Bale site covers one or two of the "fudges" as well?

Yeah, Bale's site had a full version precopy2 file to swap out with the upgrade version's.

Your other option is to look for a full version cd.
