Everytime I try to print from any application, or run wtsplmgr.exe, or try to print a test page I get the following error messages "Lexmark ColorFine Spool Manager - Fatal Error: cannot load journal dll - please reinstall" this is followed by "Lexmark 2030 series - Error while spooling to "" unable to start the spool manager" Niether MicroSoft nor Lexmark seem to know what journal dll means. Btw, there is no "." between journal and dll. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I would just totally un-install the printer and re-install it. Make sure it is totally off your computer. Go into the start menu/settings/control panel/system/device manager. Then turn your printer on and re-boot. Have your lexmark cd handy to re-install when it boots up. I have a colorfine printer and it works awesome.

i have a Epson stylus 300 with the same problem under Windows 98
Will the same solution apply to my computer?

I am having the same problem. I de-install completely using the Lexmark uninstall icon, manually deleting the printer icon from the controlpanel, and even going through the windows registry and cleaning up there. The re-install goes fine, but the problem never goes away. Has anyone got past this and to a solution?

Eureka! Working with the Lexmark support center (for $25), the problem was isolated down to a conflict between one of the tasks running in the background (the stuff you get a list of when you doi a CTL-ALT-DEL) and the Lexmark software. By trial and error, we winnowed it down to eFAX Messenger Plus, a free trial software package currently being made available to eFAX users and others. The "Plus" package seems to have the issue; as I can install and run the plain vanilla version of eFAX Messenger just fine. I hope this helps some of you.

This message is from EPSON:
Try the following steps to help correct the problem:A) Click Start, Settings, Printers, highlight Stylus Color 600, click File,
Delete, and Yes. Also, delete any duplicate icons of the driver (copy1,
copy2, copy3, etc.)B) Click Start, Find, Files or Folders. Search for and delete any printer
driver associated files that begin with the following:
EPSP*.*
EPD *.*
~*.*C) Empty the Recycle Bin then reinstall the printer driver. NOTE: It is
recommended to download & install the latest Stylus Color 600 driver
(v2.2EES) from the Epson web site. The web address is
http://support.epson.com/hardware/printer/inkjet/sc600_/filelibrary.htmlD) Once the printer driver is reinstalled, follow the steps listed below to
setup the print spooler:1. Create a dedicated spool directory such as C:\SPOOL. Click Start,
Programs, and MS-DOS Prompt. Type CD\ and press Enter. Type MD SPOOL and
press Enter. Type EXIT and press Enter.2. Click Start, Programs, Epson, Spool Manager. Highlight the Epson
printer, click Options, Default Spool Directory. Double-click on the C:\.
Scroll down the list of your directories and highlight "Spool". Click OK
twice.3. Click Queue, Setup. There should be a dot next to "Spool to local
printer" and the box next to "Use Print Manager for this port" should be
unmarked. Verify that the spool directory is C:\SPOOL. If not, click
Browse then double-click on the C:\. Scroll down the list of your
directories and highlight "spool". Click OK three times to get back to the
Spool Manager.4. Click Start, Settings, and Printers. Highlight the icon for your Epson
printer. Click File, Properties, and Details. At the bottom of the
Details tab, click Spool Settings. Click on "Print Directly to Printer"
and click OK.5. At the bottom of the Details tab, click Port Settings. Unmark both
"Spool MS-DOS Print Jobs" and "Check Port State before Printing". Click
OK. At the bottom of the Details tab, click OK.6. Close the printers box and turn the printer off. Click Start,
Shutdown, Restart the Computer, Yes.7. After Windows has restarted, turn the printer back on and send out a
new print job.
If the problem persists, try using the resident Stylus Color 600 driver
from the Windows 98 CD-ROM. To install this driver, follow the steps
listed below:1. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM in the drive and click on 'Start'
'Settings' 'Printers'.
2. Double-click on the 'Add New Printer' icon.
3. Click 'Next' until you reach the window that lists all printer
manufacturers and models.
4. Without selecting any specific models, click on the 'Have Disk...'
button.
5. This should open the 'Install From Disk' prompt.
6. In the 'Copy manufacturer's files from:' field, type the following
path: ?:\DRIVERS\PRINTERS\EPSON\STYLS600 then click on 'OK'.
NOTE: Replace the ? with the CD-ROM drive designation.
7. The 'Add Printer Wizard' should now list the printer model you are
installing. Highlight it and click on 'Next'.
8. Select the desired port (typically LPT1) and click on 'Next'.
9. The next prompt will list the name of the printer and ask if you want
to set this as the default printer. Either select 'No' or 'Yes' and click
on 'Next'.
10. The last prompt will ask 'Do you want to print a test page?'. Click
on 'Yes' and 'Finish'.
11. Windows 98 will now copy the necessary files to the hard drive and
print the test page.NOTES:
- The Microsoft drivers for Epson printers installed from the Windows 98
CD-ROM
. do NOT have the Ink Status Monitor feature.
. do NOT add an 'Epson' group to the 'Start' menu.
. do NOT have the 'Collate', 'Copies', 'Reverse Order' and 'Printable
Area' options.
. use the Windows' Print Manager, NOT the Epson Spool Manager.

Detailed Description of Problem: Epson Stylus Color 600 Dialog appears
and says: Error while spooling to ""
Unable to start the spool manager
And when I click ok : Epson Spool Manager dialog appears and says: Fatal
Error:Cannot load journal.dll - please re-install

I also had it after installing Norton Utilities 2000 with an Epson Stylus Colour 600. Completely uninstalled it, cleaned up everything, manually deleted extra files..., then no avail. I'm about to try the Epson recommended method. I spent ages searching for the solution to this problem. Thanks to the people for addressing it!

I also had this problem. I have a Epson Stylus color 400. I had installed the last versions op drivers (2.2SE) but still i had the problem: Fatal Error:Cannot load journal.dll - please re-install folled with:
Error while spooling to "" Unable to start the spool manager.
I used PGP (PGP Personal Privacy Version 6.5.2a). In the systemtray you get a icon of PGPtray. If you exit this icon or disable it from starting it in the startup of windows98 , the spooler for the printer works now well.

Nice call on disabling PGP from the system tray. I have been trying for days to sort out this problem, and then it's sorted in less than a minute. Thankyou James Harrier!

I have a Lexmark 2050 Color Jetprinter which used to work perfectly. However for some reason or another, the spool manager does not tell the printer to print anymore. I know that the printer itself works because I have printed test pages etc. but when I try to print any othe documents or images, they are loaded to the spool manager, but the printer stays "(Idle)." I have already tried uninstalling and re-installing the printer multiple times, yet the problem still recurs. I have also tried downloading and installing the newest drivers and it still doesn't work. Can anyone help me? If you can, please e-mail me at gorian3@juno.com.
PS- I am running a Windows ME system if that helps.

Same problem with my Epson Stylus Color 600 on two computers, running Windows 95 OS2 and Windows 98 Second Edition respectively.
Removed PGPtray from StartUp folder - restarted computer and voila! Printer working fine. Bravo, James Harrier!

I tried all the above to no avail. But my Epson Stylus 600 worked before so I had to backtrack: what did I install on my system that would interfere. I installed a HP cd-burner - not the problem. I installed Yahoo Messenger - not the problem. I installed a new video card - WHALA - the problem was found.
Turns out the ATI video software installed a program called Hydravision. When I did CTRL-ALT-DELETE, I noticed a program I never saw before: desk98.exe. I pressed "END-TASK" on this program and printing works perfectly. I have no idea how this software is interfering with journal.dll. Maybe some of you might?
Anyways, this might be another method of troubleshooting for all of you. Backtrack what you might have installed!!!
