I use a Lexar JD 2.0 to xter data from W98 to XP on another computer. The W98 will only recognize the JD in the following way: start W98 computer let it come up then restart computer. after restarting it will recognize the JD when i install in usb port. I've talked to Lexar JD help about this but they can't offer in suggestions. Anyone out there have a solution to my problem? Thanks is advance.

Have you tried reinstalling the drivers? I have a Lexar Jump drive which needed a driver for Windows 98 which I downloaded from the Lexar Web site.

No I haven't, I downloaded the drivers from Lexar.com and had trouble getting them to install. The drivers are installed in the devices part of systems. I'm reluctant to uninstall and try a reinstall; had so much trouble initally .

Try upgrading to Win98SE. Better USB support.

Windows 98FE will run those Lexar Jump drives just fine if you download and install the drivers from the manufactures web.
I have done this on 3 different computers running Windows98FE.
Windows98FE has gotten a bad rap about USB support by those who have not taken the time to find and solve the issues with the USB device and stop blameing the OS.
I have not had any problems with any of my USB devices on Windows 98FE: Scanner, Printer Camera, USB jump Drives, and USB 4 port hubs have worked with no problems once the correct drivers were installed in the correct order described by each manufacture!! So please quit blaming the OS for the problem!!!

I'll second that.

The first time I tried to run a USB device on Windows FE I had to change something in the BIOS. Can't remember what it was, it was that long ago, but it did work. It was USB printer I was trying to set up.

A lot depends on the hardware and with a computer running Windows 98 FE the hardware might not be up to it. Hardware manufactures don't always get it right first time.

Hey all,
Another issue that can play havok in USB devices, is if one plugs the device in BEFORE running the installation Drivers disk. I have seen to many people do this. I can't think of a single USB device that I have installed, that didn't REQUIRE one to run the install disk (CD), BEFORE even thinking about plugging the device in.

You shouldn't really encounter any problems if you were to uninstall then re-install the drivers. Just, after you uninstall, reboot the computer once, to let windows "reset" everything, then make sure that all unecessary software is not running in the background meaning in the taskbar by the clock. Turn off any firewall or anti-popup or anti-virus software. Then run the installation disk/file for the JumpDrive. After you have ran the driver install, reboot the computer, THEN, after it reboots, plug in the JumpDrive. Windows should find the Device and find/install the drivers all by itself.

AH HAH! This might explain why the memory stick or flash drive or whatever it's called -- which I bought and plugged in three months ago -- refuses to link up with the driver I downloaded. I've reinstalled the driver a dozen times with no luck.

So I guess I'll unplug the gizmo, reinstall the driver again, and plug it back in after the computer has been shut down for the night. That should do it, yes??

It didn't work. I unplugged the flash drive, uninstalled and reinstalled the driver, shut down the computer and plugged the doo-dad back in, but nothing happened when I fired the computer back up -- it didn’t detect the doo-dad.

It detected it the first time I plugged it in, before I had a driver, so I don't understand what the problem is. Could it be that the computer didn't know I'd unplugged it? Was there something else I needed to uninstall? Something to mess with in the registry maybe? I'm baffled.

I think I found the solution. Even though I had unplugged the flash gizmo, it was still installed -- as I discovered upon looking into the systems folder today. I used Device Manager to remove it, and thus fully expect that it will be detected and properly installed, with driver, when I boot everything up tomorrow.

Then maybe I can get some sleep.

Still no luck!!

Windows detected and correctly identified the device, but the installation wizard still insists I haven’t got a driver for it. Mine by the way is a Centrios from Orbyx - one gigglebyte - and I’m running Win98SE.

Anybody got any ideas?
