ok...so. my backup pc is almost set up. thanks to some people here...i've made it through several problems i faced. now everything is working nicely.

last thing i want to attempt....

i used a 1gig harddrive as the boot up drive for 98se. it is in FAT32 format.

my other two harddrives from my main pc are a 40gig and 100gig. both are NTFS. since i am waiting for parts to fix my main pc...i would like to temporarily use one of its harddrives.

the question. how can i install/attach my harddrive to the 98se system and be able to access the files that are currently on those harddrives, if plausible.

i usually say thanks ahead of time. i thought we were suppose to delete our posts after they were fulfilled. but, yeah, so far, everything has worked. mainly driver problems. but those are all resolved now.

No, you can't delete your threads. Only the site administrators can. By posting a message to say that the problem has been solved, stops us from having to continuosly recheck to see if it worked. Also anybody who finds your thread in a search can see whether or not it worked.

What you have been deleting is the tracking of your thread.

If you Google 'NTFS reader for DOS' you will find a freeware program which will allow you access to your files on the NTFS drive. Unfortunately you can't save to the NTFS drives, but at least you'll be able to get some work done.

Save the updated files to floppy or CD to transfer the updates when you get your main system going.

HTH

How the heck does that work?

Fortunately... you can't. The idea is that someone might find the solutions or information provided helpful - for instance, this post relates to your latest question

Thanks jboy, I was looking for that thread. Do you think I was being too harsh?

Not at all. It's common courtesy to acknowledge when help is offered (as well as being mentioned in the rules)

TIA isn't quite the same

(I'm still wondering where the concept of deleting your own posts upon 'fulfillment' came from - talk about covering your tracks)

Covering our own tracks isn't such a bad concept. I just googled me + computing.net to remove references to ordinance, I got 221 hits! This in a single month of being connected to the internet!

Yeah, it can be both surprising and sobering, particularly if you've been online for a while. Computing.Net posts last forever ; )

Jboy, As I said, I've only been connected to the internet for a month. I googled you +computing.net and found less than 3000 hits!

Didn't you advise Charles Babbage when he was designing his analytical engine?

.. that's only a few posts a day

I daresay Babbage would have been both amazed and appalled at the ramifications of his analytical engine.

Yes, Google really has evolved over the years

i just signed up to this site a few days ago. yes...i guess i was deleting the track to it...but i mistook it for my whole thread. if you look at my past two threads. i say thanks on my opening comment...or second one..not sure. but it's there.

and since i mistook the delete of the track to my post as the post itself...it wouldn't do any good to say 'thanks for the solution' and then deleting the post.

i'll get that software and then come back and say my thanks if it works. now that i know that i am not deleting the whole post.

ok...did my research on the NTFS reader. i don't think that it can do what i am trying to do. as i understand, it enables one to copy to another drive and preview some files from DOS mode.

unfortunately, i am running off a 1gig harddrive so i can't really copy too much over to it. and i am looking for something that will enable me to view it or use it in windows.

for example. i know i have some music on the 100gig that i would like to play. and to view some of my raw footage and short movies that i have made.

i plan on converting my 100gig harddrive into an external harddrive but that'll cost me about $40 which i'll need to help replace my other pc's processor and motheboard.

if all else fails. my other pc should be up and running right after the new year. and at least now i have this one for internet and some documents and screenplays and movie watching. thanks for the help.

Bricker, sorry, there's no other technique that I'm aware of to use the NTFS HDDs. This is a limitation of Win9X.

Another problem is getting the BIOS to recognise the size of the drives. This usually can be overcome with an upgrade.

You've already looked at making the drive external USB.

All is said and done, at least you've got a halfway usable PC and plenty of incentive to get your main one going ASAP!
