I have a machine with Windows 98 FE on it and I wish to have an internet connection on it. I have another machine that gets Internet with Ethernet and uses a router. I have USB and a Modem on both of them. Is there any way I can use a phone line or USB cable to get Internet access on the Laptop?
Or if using the phone line, is there a free ISP that I can use that doesn't need a credit card or a checking account that I can use for at least a little while since I am only borrowing the laptop?

I am looking at AOL but I can't find where to download the full thing, it only gives me a setup file to download it over the Internet. I want to get the whole thing on either a CD or floppy and set it up on my laptop.

You can connect both machines via USB and share not only web access but files, printers, scanners and more.
Think Dlink.

Well I keep running into problems,
I need to get a USB cable (This I can)But one PC is Windows 98 and the other is Linux and people seem to only like to tell you how to do things on Windows. :(.

.. especially in the Windows forum.
Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience

The best solution for an internet connection is get an ethernet connection and plug it into the router. I assume the laptop doesn't has an ethernet jack, so either a PCMCIA card or USB to ethernet adapter.

Best way of connecting multiple PCs regardless of which OS they use is to use a router (wired or wireless).
All the PCs should have a Network Interface Adapter Card (NIC) to allow you to connect an RJ45 cable upto a router (assume wired).
As you already posses a router it should be fairly easy to do.
If your laptop does not have an RJ45 (NIC) interface then you could by a PCMCIA card to give you that ability. They are fairly cheap these days.

Yeah I know, and I do use a router, it's just that the card is $40 at Circuit City and no other place sells it here locally and we wish to not spend that much for a laptop that we will not be having forever, and I aggree. I wish to only pay that much when its my laptop forever.

Have you tried e-bay?
Sometimes you can get decent cheap second user ones from there.

I don't want to sound rude, but, computers and internet is a fairly cheap hobby and forty dollars for a PCMCIA NIC is not bad. (I've paid over $200 for a 10mb NIC) The second internet connect will not be costing you anything as long as you have an available port in your router. As far as credit cards go, you are not going to do much over the internet without one, if you are not able to get one I suggest getting a checkcard which works as a credit card but is linked to you checking account.
Industrial Control ROCKS!
