Laptop restarts itself

My laptop has a pentium mmx 300mhz, 64mb RAM and Win98. Sometimes when I run some programs, it restarts itself. This even happened when I ran essential apps like disk defragmenter and my virus scanner. This doesn't happen often enough to be a major problem but I am worried. What's causing this?
i had this happen ,before updating my video card drivers and motherboard drivers to the latest ones available. can also be heat related, i have read if the cpu fan is dirty or not running random reboots can occur, also if usb is disabled this can happen. http://www.windows-help.net did have some articles on it.

Is there a power problem? Does it happen when on the battery or when plugged in? Power surges can cause computers to restart, and buying power protection can help with that.
Maybe someone else knows something else it could be?

My laptop is always plugged in. As for the fan, I haven't heard it run for quite awhile now that I think about it. One time my laptop got so hot it was uncomfortable using the keyboard. Do I have to take it into a shop or something?
