When I switched on my laptop this morning, it boot up to MS Windows 98 icon and freezed.
Booting up with a startup disk did not help either. What could have gone wrong?
Please help.
Clar

try booting up in safe mode. when u boot, and get the msg "starting windows 98..." press F8 (i think) and then select "Safe Mode"
if you can boot into windows fine then there is some sort of driver that isn't letting u boot. but if u still can't get into windows then u're gonna have to reinstall

if there is no beeping, the cpu is dead. if there IS constant long beeping, the ram chip is dead. it happened to my dell latitude cp.

if, when turned on, there is no constant beeping, the cpu is dead. if, when turned on, there IS constant beeping, the ram is dead. it happened to my dell latitude.

All,
I could not boot up using safe mode. There is no beeping sound. It boots up to MSWIN98 and stays there. Nothing appears before and after MSWIN98 icon.
Any other alternative? I don't wanna re-install as yet. By the way I am using a HP Omnibook 4150 laptop.
thanks
Clar

I don't know what the problem could be, but I am having the EXACT same problem. Went to turn on my laptop today and it froze at the 1st windows 98 screen. Same symptoms as you!!
If you figure out anything please email me. I am still trying to figure out how not save my data from the drive.

Jason and Clarissa.
I know that you both say that you cannot get into SAFE MODE, but can you get to a DOS prompt on boot up.(1) Press F8 a few times on boot up till you get a menu. Select COMMAND PROMPT ONLY. From a DOS prompt you can save all your personal info.
(2) If you cannot get to a prompt that way, it means that there is something wrong with your start up files. Reboot .. go to menu again and select COMMAND PROMPT SAFE MODE. This will bypass start up files and take you to a C:prompt, Come back for more info if this is the case.
If you did get a prompt by going step 1, reboot to menu and go STEP BY STEP CONFIGURATION. Say yes to all the questions asked and watch for error messages or where the computer falls over or hangs up. It may be a VXD driver problem.
or /and try this. At the DOS prompt type SCANREG /FIX. This may help. If not type SCANREG and select a registry to boot from. My advice is to choose the one that has the earliest date. This will obviously be the one furthest away from your problem. If it is a registry problem this may resolve it.
All the best
