I have a toshiba 200 cds laptop and have to load windows 95 on floppies and then use a upgrade disc to get 98.My floppy and cd rom drive have to share the same slot so I can not use a normal win 95 or 98 boot up disk and have a cd in my rom drive at the same time.I have formatted my hard drive and have been told I need a boot up disk that will load the drivers for my cd rom on to my hard drive even though my cd rom is not slotted in.Then I should be able to swap to my cd rom and start loading win 98.Normally I can not swap my drives around without shuting down first will this be a problem after I have used the start up disk.

Standard way round this... you need to locate the .SYS driver file for your laptop. I can email you this if you can't find. You then need a file called MSCDEX.EXE. Put these on a floppy and then boot up your lappy with the floppy inserted. Copy these files to the hard disk. Edit your CONFIG.SYS so that it points to the driver file :
DEVICE=C:ATAPICD.SYS /D:CD003
Note that I don't think ATAPICD.SYS is the correct file for Tosh laptops ... I think it is TOSCDROM.SYS off the top of my head, but don't quote me on that.

Then edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file and add a line thus :

C:MSCDEX /V /D:CD003 /M:10

Shut the laptop off. Swap the drives over and reboot back to a DOS prompt

Thanks for the advice.I have put win95 in on floopys and used a upgrade disc to get 98.I have gone to start menu,find files or folders to find .sys but nothing found.I can find a file sys (19kb Ms-dos aplication)If i look at this file it says required parameter missing.Is this right.Also I think that I have got the mscdex.exe file and now put them on a floppy.While I have got this os on my laptop when I boot it up with this floopy inserted it comes up invalaid system disk.Should I formatC and try it again.I can still get on the net on my desktop.Also how do you edit your config.sys.thanks.
