I have a laptop compuetr which is very basic. It is completely formated and it doesnt have a cd rom drive. I have an external driver which connects via pcmcia card. I do have installation disks which alters config.sys but it still won't recognise the cd rom drive.
Because of this I am not able to reinstall windows 98. I have plugged the card and the drive into my other laptop and it recognises it fine with win 98 installed but not in dos.

Look for a dos driver for the pcmcia card and drive. Then boot using a bootdisk, make the c:\ bootable (type sys c:). Reboot and install the pcmcia and cd rom drivers. HTH jj

There's a low-tech method to overcome this: a laplink cable plus the Fastlynx program (which is a DOS-based laplink app & can run from/on a floppy). Using this link copy the Win98 folder from the Windows install CD onto the laptop HDD then install Win98 from the HDD (instead of from CD-ROM)
The Fastlynx program can be emailed to you, it's only ~150K
