Hello everyone, mayber someone can help me with this !

I have an old pc with a motherboard SY - 5EHM 1.1 that was running perfect until yesterday. perfectamente. Le agregué unos puertos USB Suddendly after one reboot the keyboard stopped working, I can't even enter the BIOS setup!

I've tried another keyboard with the same result, so it seems it might be something in the motherboard.

So as it is now, the pc is useless, as I cannot go beyond the memory check!!

Does anyone have any idea?

Thanks in advance!

eltibetano,

Have you tried with a PS/2 keyboard. If it has that port. Have you tried all USB ports? Hace usted intentar con un teclado PS/2. Si tiene ese puerto. Usted ha intentado todos los puertos del USB?

Le agregué unos puertos

I added ports to ...

If ps/2 keyboard don't work.....

There is no work around I have found.

A local computer repair shop may be able to flash your BIOS.

Sorry, CrazyOne, what I meant was that I added a PCI card with 4 USB ports as the old motherboard do not have them.

I could not tried to use a PS/2 keyboard as the motherboard only has one PS/2 mouse port.

street1, do you believe that if I reset the BIOS using the jumper, the problem might be solved?

A few things to check (in order of 'easiest to fix'):

Some older boards had a 'keyboard lock' switch on the front panel. If it's connect to the motherboard (they're often left unconnected) and the switch is pushed in then your KB won't work.

Secondly many old boards had a KB fuse. It's usually on the motherboard close to the KB connection. It might be hard to recognize because it'll look a lot like a resistor and you can't tell it's blown without an ohmmeter.

It could also be a bad solder joint on the KB connector or a bad KB controller on the motherboard.

eltibetano,

If the 'old motherboard' doesn't have a PS/2 (keyboard) port. And doesn't - well didn't have USB ports. What was used for the keyboard prior, to the PCI card install? Just a second.... I'm seeing that it has two (2)(dos) USB ports, on the motherboard. Well, that's what a couple of clicks on google show me anyway. So, if it does have USB ports on the motherboard. Have you tried to use them. Also, did you disable the onboard USB ports in the BIOS? Either on purpose, or maybe by accident. This is all being asked. With the understanding, that the motherboard, indeed, does have onboard USB ports.

I guess, back to what was being used before the PCI card. Please explain, thanks. Also, what does it say on the screen. You say you get as far as memory check, and that's it. What does it say, thanks. And if, if you disabled the USB in the BIOS. You could try clearing the BIOS. That goes back to the assumption. 1.) That the motherboard does, have onboard USB. 2.) It was disabled, for whatever reason. 3.) And if it does have USB ports, they've all been tried.

You're Welcome and Thanks,
CrazyOne

That's an AT motherboard with, no doubt, a PS/2 mouse connection. I assumed he was using an AT keyboard. If it was a USB keyboard then likely it's a USB port problem.

I think I have another problem. I have an ascentia 950-N AST 1995 laptop (it was a gift, I cannot afford another one) There are a few useful keys in its keyboard, I started using an external keyborad an mouse, I had to configure in its setup, but since the battery is broken its impossible for me to configure it.

Question: Is there any way to start my laptop using the external mouse and keyboard by default? I don't know, using a rescue disk or any kind of program.

Thaks in advance

Thank you

DAVEINCAPS,

Oh-hmm-yes ;-) That word assume I assumed, after seeing 'I added ports...' That the person, did indeed add USB ports. Hmm, that assumption was correct. But, needed to be told, to be sure. And going off that assumption. I thought maybe, maybe they conected a USB keyboard to the ones they added. Also, looking at the specs. The word ((optional)), gets used for PS/2 mouse, and USB. Go figure ;-) Having to assume everything, makes things a tad _____ (< fill in with your own ;-)) Back to scratching my head. And yes, I did say head Be safe Dave...

Later,
CrazyOne

P.S. I think someone, is trying to highjack this OPs question :-) maybe not... If you are. Start your own question. Or go back to the one you have started already. Thanks

Yeah, I had to find a pic of the motherboard to make sure it was AT. It's likely something happened while they were inside the case adding the card.

Baldovor, I don't know how it's configured but you shouldn't need the battery to get it started. It should start up with the battery adapter/charger connected. You may want to start a new thread if you need additional help.
