When KazaaLite has partially downloaded a really big video file, is there a way to view what it has downloaded so far without having to wait until the whole file is downloaded? It stores them as .dat files as it is downloading. It can take days for a big download to be complete. If I could look at an initial video segment, I could decide not to download the rest, or I could see if it is bogus.

If you can identify the file in the MY SHARED FILE folder, you can copy the .dat file to another folder, re-name the extention to .mpeg or what ever it should be and open that. There is the facility to open part downloaded files using the THEATRE option in Kazaa but that would mean opening the files without virus checking first...

For safer use of Kazaa see....

Hi, Mike.

When you right-click a file, the first option is preview/play. This allows you to listen/view what you have downloaded so far (if you use a download manager, disable it first). For videos, it works with any file extension except .AVI. For AVIs, there's a program called AVIPreview, which comes with the last version of KaZaA Lite. If you're not interested in the latest KaZaA Lite and want the standalone program, you can download it HERE.

Hope this helps.

The one time I was trying to use the Kazaa Theater, nothing was showing. I also created a problem for myself by doing this: while a .dat file was still downloading, I copied it within the MyShared Files folder and renamed the copy as "test.avi". Then I tried to view the copy in WMPlayer. It wouldn't play anything, but the worst is that since then I have not been able to delete "test.avi" (whether or not Kazaalite is running) because WinXP always tells me it is use by another person or process.

Maybe this shows that you shouldn't copy files within the MySharedFiles folder.

Also, I wonder if trying to view a file while it is still downloading can cause a foul-up.

Especially if they are really big files. One of these video files was 500MB. Maybe an avi file that big is big enough to freeze your system, if you have too many other programs going at the same time.

In other words, to still be downloading a file that is already 500MB, copy it in the same folder, and try to play it in a player, all at the same time, could overtax the system?

I have Pentium 3 with 1.2 MHz.

I discovered I couldn't delete the one file because it was in the MySharedFolder. I went into MyTheater, and was able to delete it by right-clicking on it there.

By the way, what about the post I saw somewhere else that the new upgrade to KazaaLite should be avoided, because it has more spyware like the original Kazaa? I haven't had a real problem with KazaaLite - minimal popups.
