I'm having LONG delays and often stalls, once again, when loading pages on Computing.Net when a certain ad is loaded at the top of the page.
It's for Microsoft System Center - the horizontal one that starts with the blow up of a clock face.
If the ad loads from the beginning the text in the thread often will not load until the ad has loaded completely, taking several minutes, after the Get the Big Story banner appears and the circles have appeared on the right V icon and disappeared, and even then the thread text may not load. Sometimes clicking on Refresh at that point loads a different ad, or the same ad but it doesn't start at the beginning, and the text in the thread displays normally. Sometimes clicking on Refresh at that point starts the cycle of the same ad loading all over again from the beginning.
It does not cause as long a delay or any stalls when a very similar ad is loaded at the right vertically, but it slows down scrolling through the text in the thread as long as that ad is being displayed. In both cases it does not seem to be using much if any extra resources or cpu usage when I have the problems.
I thought it might be related to my still having IE 5.5 on my more frequently used 98SE installation, so I upgraded it to IE 6 -little or no change as far as this ad is concerned.
I tried accessing Computing.Net using my other 98SE installation, when is relatively fresh and has IE 6 on it and only a few added programs - a little better but no cigar. As you may recall I had this problem a while back with a certain Canada specific ad before in 98SE, in IE 5.5, and you were able to do something or contact someone and that fixed the problem.
Perhaps you could do that again?I'm assuming that ad is a problem for anyone with 98SE on their computer who happens to be in Canada, who has their Location set to Canada in their Windows settings, who accesses Computing.Net.
This is displayed at the bottom of my screen when this ad is causing a LONG delay - there may be more after the end of it but I can't see it, or select and copy the url:

Oops - title should have been
MSC ad problem in 98SEThe very similar MSC ad loaded at right only slows down scrolling through the thread text if it has not reached the end of it's loading sequence.
The same applies whether looking at a thread, or a list of threads in a forum, or my MyComputing.Net list.

On a related note I have had delays for the past couple of days. The confirm button just sits there sometimes for a minute of more. Not sure it is on your end or not because after using CDCleaner I can immediately return here and be OK for awile. Eventually the issue returns. I haven't paid attention to which ads may be visable at the time.

Hello,
OtheHill, ads probably wouldn't effect that. The system does a DNS lookup on you when you post. That could be going slow.
Tubesandwires, can you post the correct URL? The one you posted is messed up.
Justin

I just had two instances where I attempted to post a response to an ongoing thread and when I click on confirm nothing seems to happen. Site is working properly other than that issue.

Hey,
Are you sure "nothing happened?" If that's the case, it might be an advertisement. Next time you think nothing is happening, make sure no page is trying to load and just going slow.
Justin

"blow up of a clock"
Gee, I didn't realize what crap I was missing; since I've blocked doodle and other intruderware.
LOL
=====================================
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

I also had it quit responding after confirming a post. I usually track the post in the next screen that does not appear.

"Tubesandwires, can you post the correct URL? The one you posted is messed up."
That's all I can determine.
As I said....
"there may be more after the end of it but I can't see it, or select and copy the url".Update - it has the left half of a 9 as well on the very end sometimes.
If it's of any help, clicking on the ad goes here, as does the very similar ad that displays vertically on the right side:
http://www.microsoft.com/canada/sys..."Is anyone else getting (regularly) really long delays after they click confirm?"
I forgot to mention I sometimes also get the LONG delay or stall when clicking on Confirm, if that ad is at the top at the time and is loading from the beginning.
I don't have any problem with this same ad in XP on a faster computer I also have.
Overall, when that ad is not at the top, I often get a delay after clicking on a thread or a forum list or the MyComputing.Net list - the text is there but I can't scroll down for up to ten seconds or so. I thought maybe that had to do with my 450mhz cpu for that 98SE installation I use most often.

Tubesandwires,
That slowdown sounds like it is caused by EchoTopic. Mouse over an echotopic red underlined ad and click "?" On that page, you should see an option to disable echotopic. Try doing that.
Justin

Ok - I tried that.
Thanks for that suggestion.Opting out of displaying echo topic on Computing.net helps somewhat.
It was better still after I rebooted.- most of the time this is not happening anymore:
"Overall, when that ad is not at the top, I often get a delay after clicking on a thread or a forum list or the MyComputing.Net list - the text is there but I can't scroll down for up to ten seconds or so."
......- when the top ad is the MSC one loading from the beginning, if Done is displayed at the bottom of the screen (Done was rarely displayed before), the thread or list text appears right away or in a very short time and I can scroll through it right away, but jerkily.
- when the top ad is the MSC one loading from the beginning, if the same URL as at the end of response 1 is displayed at the bottom of the screen, the thread or list text appears right away or in a very short time, but I cannot scroll down, even after the ad sequence has finished, even after Refreshing, if it's the same ad that then appears.
- in both cases the the ad sequence finishes a lot faster, in maybe 30 seconds, and it is not jerky like it was before.
- there is another pair of sequential MSC ads, one a top one, one a right side one, that have graphics of a skyscraper beng panned - that one is not jerky like it was before either.
...What I didn't mention before is when that URL in response 1 is displayed, there is also a blue bar displayed on the bottom of the screen on the right, the one you get when a page has not finished loading, that does not go away even when the ad sequence has finished.
That's still there.

Hey,
I e-mailed the people about the Microsoft ad. They said they will look into it. Of course, that computer is kind of old, and that is most likely the reason both the EchoTopic and Microsoft ad are slowing it down.
Justin

Yep, I'd say that the problem is your 450MHz processor. I still sometimes fire up my old P2-333/512MB machine (which runs IE6 on Win2K), and any webpage with Flash (including computing.net) slows it waaay down.
The trick is to minimize IE while it's loading a webpage. The page will load much quicker, since the minimized browser won't rob all of the CPU time trying to play a Flash ad. But even then, scrolling is extremely jerky until the ad stops playing. You could just disable Flash.
The lean, mean, movie playing P3 machine
P3-S 1400 @ 1.66GHz, 158MHz FSB
2GB PC2700 DDR
7950GT AGP
Optoma 1280x720 projector
JBL 5.1 amp and speakers
Now storing 114 HD movies

I just tried constantly monitoring my cpu usage with AnalogX Netstat Live while accessing pages on this site. It appears the cpu usage is at least 85% and is often at 100%.
While I'm typing this it's averaging 93%.Update: the cpu load is much less, even only a few percent, when there are no ads that are loading animation on the page.
"The trick is to minimize IE while it's loading a webpage"
Minimizing IE while loading a page only decreases the cpu usage at most three percent.
When the MSC ad is loading from the beginning with the url in response 1 at the bottom of the page, it is using 100% continuously, whether IE is minimized or not.
Yes, I may need to disable Flash, or do something else, to improve the situation.Apparently opting out of displaying echo topic on Computing.net decreases the cpu load a few percent.
It's a K6-III 450, which because of it's built in L2 cache, performs, according to Sysoft Sandra, equivalent to a 541 mhz cpu.
It performs much better than a PII 450 does, and I can run programs meant for a minumum 500mhz or more cpu and have no problems.

I found a good solution for the Flash ads on this site, and for the excessive use of Flash in general on many web sites greatly slowing down slower computers.
I downloaded the freeware FlashSwitch.exe and installed it.
The Flash player can then be easily switched on or off via an icon in the taskbar.
When Flash is off, ads still load in the usual places on Computing.Net but none are Flash, and the cpu usage on Computing.Net is then minimal on this 450mhz computer.(It's for Internet Explorer only.
It must be switched on or off when IE is not running.)

Justin,
Couldn't really find an appropriate forum/place to post this, and since it's already covered in this post; The opt out of ECHO-Topics (your Post # 10) doesn't work for me. Followed the instructions, even logged out and back in. They're still there. Am I missing something?
P.S. Sorry to butt in.

I had to reboot as well.It only makes at most a 5% difference in cpu usage.
See response 15 - that's a much more effective solution.

I don't get delays after clicking confirm, but sometimes I get
a server error. No matter what, the message always ends up posted anyway.
I used to get delays after clicking confirm, not anymore. If my replies look messed up, I'm sorry. I use Safari on a Mac the majority of the time, and the web hasn't really caught up yet.

Hi there everybody,
I just posted a reply to http://www.computing.net/office/www... that was taking a long time after hitting the Confirm button and then it went to "Internal Server Error".
I hit the back button but the page was expired.
My reply was posted though.I have not seen this before just moments ago.

Bryan(Edit) P.S. I had no issue when confirming this reply. It went smooth and fast.

I had the same thing happen as Bryco's case, for one post yesterday. Clicking on Confirm again after a short wait after the sever error message resulted in 2 identical posts in the thread, without the usual double post message.

Justin, I hope so, I have had problems with the confirm button too. I am running Athlon 64 4000 2GB RAM. Shouldn't be any slowdowns with this rig.

I'm now experiencing looong delays when clicking on a (subscribed) topic from My Computing.net. (My Quick Launch shortcut takes me directly to My Computing.net.)
Progress bar at the bottom of the (IE6) window goes to around 30% or so then just sits there. Hitting Refresh pops open the linked topic right away after that. From then on, no problems. Everything is quick.
This started last night for me. This is the only slowdown I'm seeing.
It's a good day when you learn something
