All my .jpg files have suddenly changed into something called a QuickTime Picture. I don't know how this could have occured as i do not have quicktime on my computer. The files now have a different icon and when I try to open them I am told that a 'fatal exception has occured' and my system crashes. The only thing that I have recently downloaded is the latest version of the Java Sun plug-in but i don't see how this would affect my image files! How can I restore them back to how they should be?

The file associations might be messed up. Left click on any image file and then hold down the shift key and right click on the selected file. Then choose to Open With...and choose Internet Explorer or whatever program that used to open a jpg before this happened. Then make sure to put a check mark on the bottom where it says to make this the program to open this kind of file. Now image files should open with the program you have selected.
Hope that helps.
Kevin.

HelloBoth Kevin and The Sage are right.I just wish to recommend you a very nice and handy
program called Irfan View which I use for a
long time.It can view and edit all most used
types of graphic files(JPG/JPEG, BMP,GIF...)
and also can convert any type to any tipe.
When install it, you need only to check the
types of files you wish Irfan to handle and
hit OK.You may want to learn more about Irfan View and even try it.Good luck.

"Quick Time wants to be King of your computer."
LOL
I am sure this is one of the most hated feautures of Windows !
Solution would be to shift-rightclick on such a file, select the 'open with' funtion, check the box 'always use this program to open these files' and select the program you want to use to open the type of file you just opened.

Helen, If a QuickTime icon showed up you most probably do have QuickTime installed. A lot of programs especially ones on CD's have the QuickTime program included because QuickTime is needed to run the program. See if QuickTime is in your programs folder and if it is disconnect from the Internet and do the following.
Open QT, click edit-Quick Time Preferences, from dropdown select File Type Associations. Uncheck Windows File Types and Internet File Types. Leave MAC Files checked. This should unassociate them with QT, but still might have reassociate with Paint, Explorer and so on.
