I'm Running W98 SE. Over night I've Lost my "Show Desktop" icon from my Quick Launch Tool Bar. It now just appears as an 'icon-less' button ( the normal default Windows symbol icon ). It says it points to a file called : Show Desktop.scf . When I click it I get the "Open With..." requester. I can't find out how to restore it!! I tried to run SFC.exe but it doesn't seem to help. HELP PLEASE !!!

You have lost the file association.
Associate with explorer.exe

When u get the open with dialog box, select explorer.exe, and also select open always.

in the properties, u may select 'use DDE' and the DDE message should be '[ShellFile("%1","%1",%S)]'

Try it and post the results

Install Tweakui,(rt click on the .inf file and clk install) search for it on your install CD or better yet download the latest version here.
www.surecool.com/download.htm
Among many other features it has a rebuild tab & you can rebuild ALL the Icons if needed.

I use the hell out of my Quick Launch options, and I like the one-click convenience, but I have to admit that Windows98 does the same thing to me every so often. It's annoying, and I'm still working on a solution, etc.

Here's what ya gotta do...

1. Right click on the bad icon and delete it.
2. Go to your desktop and right click on any blank part of the screen.
3. Select New... Shortcut
4. When the dialog box appears asking for the command line, type in the following...

"C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\Show Desktop.scf"

5. Name the Shortcut as you want.
6. After the shortcut appears on your desktop, drag it into the Quick Launch bar.
7. At this point, you can then delete the shortcut that is still on the main desktop.

By the way... in case you don't know...
The folder containing the icons for your Quick Launch bar or bars is located at
Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer

Best of luck...

As for that command line I gave you...
DO NOT TYPE IN THE QUOTATION MARKS

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHOW DESKTOP.SCF

Sorry bout that...

Thanks all. I Tried all of these... but still no go! When the Open With requester comes up it does not allow me to select Open Always?? It is inactive. When I select open with Explorer.exe, an explorer window opens and displays the text script of the .scf file.. Rebuilt icons with Tweakui = no go. Deleted and re typed the scf file - resaved etc. etc. still same. I just don't know what to do next?? It seems like my association for .scf has been lost but I don't know how to restore it.

Has anybody found a solution to the lost Show Desktop icon?? My youngest son somehow changed mine to a Jack-in the-box that brings up the (Open With) dialog box. I tried all the fixes above but to no avail.
any other ideas?? Thanx, Blake
