Thanks for the help but scanreg /restore didnt work, neither did the reinstall of win98, any other ideas?
thank u

Hi Natasa,
Can you boot up in safe mode? To do this, restart the computer and keep tapping the F8 key. This will bring you to a boot selection screen. From there choose Safe Mode.
Have you installed any software or drivers recently? If you have, try uninstalling it. If you are able to boot up in safe mode, do a virus scan, in addition to a disk cleanup and scandisk/defrag. Post back with your results.
Good Luck,
~winipcfg

Yes! I tried booting in safe mode, i get the green background but again no icons or start menu.
Last week i installed and uninstalled northon antivirus, but it worked for a week before this happeneed.
Any other ideas?

Hi,
When you uninstalled Norton, did you install another antivirus software? Or are you now without Virus protection? If the latter, a virus may have corrupted your operating system. That's kinda unlikely, but not impossible, though. You may want to try replacing your RAM, as Don Miller suggested in your first thread unless anyone else out there has any more ideas.
HTH,
~winipcfg

Did you install any applications before you restarted and then it didn't work? Windows may well just be stopping at this point due to a bad process caused by a program that was trying to load.

"When i click control alt delete at that point i get only one process running that is winxd or something."
I suspect that `winxd' is the problem. Explorer should be the first thing started. Did you install winxd recently?

Yeah, pull all RAM sticks and try only 1 at a time.
Also if you have a boot floppy, may want to go to http://www,f-prot.com/ with puter U are on now, and get this "DOS & BIOS antivirus scanner"Did you also run Scandisk from DOS (floppy) before?
Also double check (Ctrl+Alt+Del) that program name "winxd" surely doesn't sound right!!!

Hi y'all,
natasa,
Have you checked your "win.ini" to see if the "winxd" is in the load or run lines? If so, delete it from your "win.ini" ( just a thought)
beansoup

Excellent thought Beansoup!
Natasa, you can open win.ini in Dos by using Edit. Boot to Dos and type:
edit c:\windows\win.ini

HI ALL
did a web search on "winxd" it looks like a program from Clear Choice Networks Inc part of CNN http://www.clearpro.com/login/hostedapp.asp
likely not much help.
