How do I stop my browser(IE 5.5)always opening at my ISP`s home page. I`ve tried "Tools" "Options" "Use Current, all to no avail. My ISP`s home page takes a long time to load.

Hi Eddie:

who is your provider would be the first question i'd ask. the reason, oddly enough, is that different ones have different was of making sure you hit their homepage. some require registry dives while others just require removing a few startup files.. still others actually lock you out of the ability to change the homepage [grayed out homepage line] in tools/options. i'll be looking for your reply and will give you an answer then.

thanks for your patience.

What you mentioned is the only way that I know of.

I assume that the webpage is not the ISP page when you press "Use Current", correct?

You should be able to type in whatever page you'd like in that box.

There are ways for a webpage to change that, but they're not supposed to be able to do it without some sort of popup verification box. But there must be ways around that, because I know that mine has been changed without my permission.

The short is, your only option may be to complain to the ISP. Threaten to cancel if they won't quit. Whether you actually cancel depends upon your options w/ other ISPs.

Correct your home page to the one you prefer, then immediately do the following:

Backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\
Right-click on the Internet Explorer key, choose new>Key, name it Control Panel.
Right-click on the Control Panel, chose new>DWORD value, name it Homepage. Right-click
on Homepage, choose modify and type in the number 1.

This should lock your home page, so no other web site can change it.

Then navigate here and verify the homepage is correct:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
look for the Start Page entry.

Why bother with being restricted to having to log onto to the one website? I don't bother with the Iexplorer icon myself & have deleted it from the desktop. Find it a lot better by placing a shortcut to "favourites" in my task bar. (c:\windows\favourites.) Can take my pick then as to what webby I go to first.

Different folks-different strokes. I don't log on with the IE icon either. I use one of the many I have on quicklaunch bar. Mail is usually the first thing most people check before coming here to computing.net.

-> andyb (#5),

>have deleted it from the desktop.
There's just a box to uncheck and that would be better to use the right procedure, no?
IE/Tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab/uncheck the box "Display IE on the desktop" in the Navigation section.

>to "favourites" in my task bar.
Here too, something has been designed in Windows98: just click on Start and you'll see your "Favorites" just below Programs.

I put the COMPUTING.NET RULES in there saying it was the greatest. I did it with html without any text and if you click on it it will give you a list of all the posts all the way back to 99. So if you don't want a huge list don't click. I should have left the part out.

wow where did all this come from? One minute I was reading Dekes posting then a thousand others appeared! :¬) Did I sound offensive or something above?? It was just an alternative suggestion as to what I do..as for "deleting" the icon from desktop..it was just a loose term meaning I got rid of it..you can't just delete it..So yes I did it the way you suggested..& two..yes there is favourites in the start button but I find it quicker to click on it in front of me rather than clicking on start & having to scroll up then across...Can everyone get off my case now? :¬)
