My son had XP in his computer but didn't like it so I installed Win98SE. It seems that 98 is running slower then XP did and I'm not sure why? This is a list of what is in his system:

ECS k7s5a pro
ati 9000
duron 1.6
512 ddr
maxtor 40g
lite on dvd
sony cdrw
sony floppy
onboard sound and LAN

Now I know XP boots faster but I wasn't sure if it ran better all the way around or if I was missing something.

it appears the ecs k7s5a pro is a motherboard, but i assume it's got a worthy processor (> 2 GHZ) in it. Windows 98 is slower. Personally I hate XP as well, but out of the two I would probably choose xp for speed. Then again personally I prefer windows 2k, let the scoffing begin...

Yes, the ECS is a motherboard and the cpu is a 1.6 ghz. The XP ran good with this set up but the 98 does run a bit slower.

Hi Michelle,

W98 is considerably faster so there must be something else going on.

Is it slow with few or no apps running?

Or does it get slower as more programs are opened.

I also prefer w2k; be I'm used to being scoffed at.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

What I've noticed is that it seems to run a bit slow from boot. Before it had a Geforce 4 and sd ram but he needed the Ati to run his RCT3 so I pulled out the video card and ddr memory from my daughter's and put it in his. I did a clean install of 98 using fdisk and format (enabled large disk support). The 98 was the upgrade version so I also had to use the 95 when it prompted me to do so. When the add hardware wizard popped up I cancelled and added the drivers for the board once 98 was installed. I'm no expert in computers but I'm not a beginner either. I've built 7 and installed OS's before including 98. But this has me stumped. There is VCom antivirus and firewall installed and the internet is cable, which by the way connected without having to use the Comcast disk. My son even noticed that it is slower. I thought it should run good with the better memory but it didn't.

A few too many moving parts for me, but if you replaced a geforce [which I think is nvidia] with an ATI, that may be an issue.

If I were you, I would try installing Windows 2000 Pro. I think your son will like it. It is much more stable than Win98, and it looks a lot like Win98. And it doesn't have the "Playskool interface" of WinXP that a lot of people don't care much for (myself included).

He likes Windows 2000 as well. It's what they use in his school so maybe I'll try to get that for him instead. Thanks for the replies.

What didn't your son like about XP? Apart from the interface (which can be turned off, so it looks like 2k/98) and a few extra features, its very similar to 2k. And like 2k its much more stable than 98. But its also more secure than 2k now (especially since SP2), and will be supported longer (though I do agree 2k is a very good operating system).

Just a few points for you to consider!

btw - it may run slower under 98 because of newer components which 98 may not be able to use to full extent. 98 definitely runs faster on older machines, but can have compatibility issues with newer ones (I know this isn't 'new', but it is compared to when 98 was in its 'prime' - if it ever was!)

Really I think it had a lot to do with his school. 2K is what they have there so he uses it more. He has 98 for now because I already had the upgrade version and for $30 was able to get 95 full version. I have never used 2000 myself but I have heard that it is a good system. He likes to do the upkeep in his and I think 98 may be easier for him to find them and use them. His birthday is coming soon so he will probably get the 2000. Thanks for the reply, I didn't about the parts being new and 98 being old.

There is not really any need to
purchase an outdated system
like Win 2000 for his birthday
unless you want to drive
the kid crazy. Might as well
stick with Win 98 SE. However,
if you are determined, go here
for the Win 98 SE update,
which you absolutely need to do:
--->
Win 98 SE Updates

There is also a forum devoted
to update tips & tricks including
an improved version of Win 2000,
which can be used with Win 98 SE.
I have never used it, but the
makers claim it eliminates all
the problems that Win 2000 had.
You must have the Win 98 SE
install disk, as they do not
provide that. May solve your
problem if you want to use
Win 2000, after a 98 SE install.

However, a higher speed computer
should not have any problem
with a resource hog such as
Win XP. When it runs properly,
it should run faster. Some
Win 98 programs do not run
on XP, but a computer with
XP should have XP programs.
Instead of buying Win 2000,
look for online discount places
that sell XP programs.
