There are USB cables that you can buy. They are fine for temporary hookups and cost about $30-$40 US. If you are thinking about something permanent, there is the Ethernet option. You'll need a Ethernet card for each system and a cable (crossover). For a two system hookup it will cost a few dollars more than the USB setup.

There are even cheaper serial and parallel port cables, but they are much slower than the above.

Yes you can, but I would forget about firewire, its probably and expensive solution to a simple problem.
The simplest is to get two Network Interface Card and a Cat5 crossover cable. Install the cards and connect them together with the cable. Set each computer up as a network client using TCP/IP. Give one computer and address of 192.168.000.001 and the other 192.168.000.002. Use a sub mask of 255.255.255.000 on both.

covers all flavours of M$ OS networking; be it via NICs, usb connections, DCC (Direct Cable Connection) parallel or serial cables.
The NIC in each PC and a cross-over cable method is probably the simplest, fastest/most efficent, easiest (cheapest?) to set up. Cost around $10-15 per NIC; $5-10 for the cat-5 cross-over cable.
Jo Helmig (link above) covers it all for you - basics upwards.
