My power went off sometime during the night so I decide to leave and come back later. I came back and I could hear my desktop on. The cd drives were spinning and the fans were on. I pushed the power off but then when I tried to turn it on nothing happened. Is my power supply just fried or the mobo? I really hope my hard drives are stil good. Any advice?

More than likely it burned out your power supply.

Just replace it and that should solve it.

The stores usually will take it back if that isn't the problem ,but I would say 95% chance that is what happened.

Have you checked any fuses to see if they have blown. When you say your power went off I assume you mean the mains power to the house. I don't quite understand when the power came back on the PC booted up, I,d have thought that when you turned you're machine on again you would have just faced scandisk for not shutting down properly.

If you are not electrically minded get someone to check the continuity. check power going into the power unit and also open the machine unplug a power supply to say the cd rom drive and check powers coming out of the cable. Burnt out this or that seems a little extreme for a power cut.

HI

Sound like the off button stuck in.

The power black-out could have been a contributing factor, but all powered up when the power came on. A power supply that was working till the moment you used the off switch, could have blow a fuse as M suggested. (High initial load on start up)

However it won't be the first time something electrical has been scrutinized over until the #?$%% switch is found to be stuck or broken.

Your welcome, glad you got it fixed and my 95% sure paid off.

This happened to at least 30 people I know including myself on only one of my pc, during that big power outage we had last summer.

Since it was your power supply after all it may be an idea to buy a UPS or at least a power surge protector for your supply. As we are expecting power cuts this winter over here in the sunny UK I am going to sort something out before I am facing the same dilemma.

Hi again

Inside the power suppy unit itself is a fuse - sometimes 2 of them. How were those fuses within the old power supply. I was just curious.

Good suggestion by M with the power surge protector - good for a bit of lightning protecting as well.

Thanks
