linux and 98, yes...read the help faq that comes with linux.

Basically you will create a linux partition, either on disk with 98 OS files, or separate hard drive, and load to Linux from floppy.

XP and Linux? I don't know, but I'm sure it's possible...with this setup I would consider using system commander or a separate hard drive do to the nature of the XP file system (I think it's NTFS..anyone know differently??)

Yes, ive done it with 98SE. I assume its possible with XP but i havent tried it.

This is how i did it:
Fdisk the drive. Create a primary partition to install windows on. You determine how much space to give each OS i always allocate 50% for each.
Create an extended partition to install linux on.
Once the drive has been fdisked and formatted load windows 98 on the primary partition just as you would load it on any clean drive. "C:" after windows install has been completed.. install linux on the extended partition. During the linux install you will be prompted at some point to create a lilo boot floppy, do it!.
The lilo boot floppy allows you to boot into linux when inserted at startup. If not inserted windows will load
Sharing files between the two:
You should be able to see the windows partition when linux is running, this means you can grab txt docs images music etc. while under linux. SuSE creates a desktop shortcut to the windows partition but i dont know if your distro will. you wont be able to see the linux partition while running windows 98SE. There might be a way but i havent found it yet. Im sure if there is someone will post the "howto". Either way locating all of your data on the windows partition as a rule will allow you to use it under both operating systems. Just adding this because it took me a few cd-rs and some sweating to figure this was the easy way to go, this might also be something to thing about when choosing partition size, maybe 30% for linux instead of 50%. You be the judge. Make back ups of your data and keep them around till you get this stuff sorted out.
This is the link to the MSKB page that tells you how to use the fdisk and format tools just incase.
After about 2 months of linux i was able to navigate it pretty well but ive screwed it up many times, just gotta get back on the horse till you get it right. GoodLuck!

i just finished typing and read justins post.
I almost forgot about the partition manager built into the distro of linux i have.
my first experience with linux was with a single partition with windows 98se installed. I ran the suse setup which had a built in feature that allows you to grab some of the windows partition and use it for linux. After several tries i kept getting an error telling me to partition the drive by other means. what this meant was that the built in utility couldnt do the job and i had to fdisk it or try something like partition magic. I later found out norton antivirus might have been the reason. Im not sure about this because i never tried it that way again. You might get lucky with justins suggestion and be able to squeeze the win partition rather than formatting/fdisking the drive.
