Okay, now I'm really in a fix. I installed Windows 95 on my old laptop, and it came with IE4 included. I tried to go to Windows Update to download all the critical updates awaiting my attention, but it said you have to have IE5 or higher to use it. Okay, no problem, I think, I'll download the latest version right now. HOWEVER, IE6 doesn't support Windows 95, and they've completely discontinued IE5. I can't find IE5 anywhere, and where I can find it, it's the file that needs to connect to the Microsoft website to download the parts you want to install, which are no longer available. If this is counted as "asking for copyrighted software" then please hit me over the head with the Ban Hammer, but I don't think it is since IE is always freely distributed on the MS website; in this case it's just not the one I need.

P.S. Before you say it, my memory expansion card is already shipping. No more low-memory conditions here. Reason for not installing Windows 98: it doesn't come on floppy disks, and would take up too much of my hard drive were I to copy the installation CD onto it.

It is illigal to install IE 5x now because it has entered the ectended support stage of its contract. Meaning is cannot be downloaded and installed now but you can still recieve support for it if you currectly have it on your computer. You may be able to find the file on old magazine cd's

See if you can dig up an older AOL, Earthlink, MSN, etc CD & just install IE from the disk...it'll save you the download time

illigal? ectended support? currectly? (wtf?)

IE 5.5 works well enough on my old 95A box, but it's a honkin' big download (fortunately I've got it on CD) - that'd be your best bet, if you can transfer from the CD to your HDD.

Thanks very much for that link, Budm. I have a parallel DTC so moving large things between my desktop and laptop is not a problem. By the way, BigBob, your link returns a "Server not found" error.

<Joel> It is not illegal to install any version of Internet Explorer! True Microsoft no longer provide it on the MS Website. But other locations do.

Bob was a little careless - it's oldversion (without the 's') - great site, but not much use in this instance, the versions of IE offered there are older than the one on Sokko's machine.

Quite a range of stuff available from the site budm linked - lots of choices either way.

This is appearently going to come as some shock to some of you but ie 5.50 SP2 is still downloading from MS servers just like ie 6.00 does but there is no link to that one either - only ie 6.00 SP1. Just in case you had a hankerin to do it like we did iy in the good old days.
ie5setup.exe 5.50 SP2
ie6setup.exe 6.00
ie6setup.exe 6.00 SP1

And all three still work with the switches in this Kb article. Don't believe everything you read OK?
