Question 1:

Hi I was wondering if there is any way to make my IP number stay the same when I disconnect from the internet and when I connect to the internet?? is there some program that I can run or something?? (I have aol)

Question 2:

Is there any way to hide my ip address when I use a dail-up network so that a router at my work will not record it?? I'm useing a VPN dail-up network. The Network at work has a static ip address. I just want to hide my ip so that I can see what they are doing when I'm not at work and they are.

thanks!!

#1) No.

#2)No. Well, maybe. Try something like ZoneAlarm from www.zonelabs.com. Can't hurt to try.....

My number stays the same, if I use my ISP's proxy server.

if your ip address is hidden to a computer, that computer cannot communicate with you.. hense "hiding" your ip address really has no point (it's like writing someone a letter and expecting a reply, but not including a return adress in order to hide your identity)

zonealarm will hide ports...and i highly recommend it

Q1)
If you sepecify static IP information in your TCP/IP properties of your dial-up adapter your pptp connection will try to obtain that IP address. If the address is already taken by someone else it will revert to the next available address.

Q2)
I suppose you can take the address out of any WINS or DNS servers you have - this will make you less visible, unless there scanning the network. Or, if it's a windows machine you can enter false ip's into your WINS and DNS server for the specified name of your machine this will make them try to query a nonexistent or alternative machine. As for not allowing them to see your IP then you wouldn't be able to see theirs.

The best solution would be to set an alternate network where the base internal net work wuold be like 198.168.x.x and an alternate internal network would be something like 172.16.x.x then set your pptp server to assign you the alternat network address - at this point you would want to attach to a server you've set up with an address on both networks (Linux,WinNT and Win2000 you can set two IP's to the same NIC Win9x requires some registry hacking but can be done) and then monitor from that server or you can setup masquerading between the two networks on the machine with two IP's and you can monitor directly from your pc (I've done this before with Linux, WinNT, and Win2000). The users of the regular internal network won't have a route to your machine if they are using a diferent gateway than the machine that has two IP's although if you use masquerading any connection to their machine from your's will show a connection from the machine with two IP's.

Alot of work for something you can automate with Linux.
