What application are you trying to run off your CD-ROM??
And, I suppose w/ the new hardware out, it's appropriate to ask: Did you buy this CD, or did someone make it for you? Does it happen on all of your CDROMs, or just a few (and if it's just a few, which ones??)

I also have this problem. When I try to install Big Game Hunter II, I get a message M:/setup.exe is not a valid Win32 application. Has anyone found the reason for this message? The game manufacturer, Microsoft and others have been no assistance. We have installed this same game on other computers without incident. I have had no issues such as this with any other CDs on my PC. Help!

Same, same old thing. In my case, I'm running ie5 on win98se and when I boot up a brief (dos?) message says, "emm 386 not installed" and xms manager not present. I surf fine except the outlook express, where the message, "not a valid win32 app." What goes? I've redownloaded explorer.
Thanks en adelante,

With your Questions about downloading files from the Internet, we finally have a partial answer! Our Winzip file was corrupt,So we simply reinstalled Winzip! And now those files work! BUT,we still have the same problem with our CD-ROM. If anyone has an answer, please e-mail us at billyandjoe@cwcom.net.

look, either use an original cd - not a copy (and if it the original, take it back!) or download the file again from the internet......it's just a corrupt file of some sort......people seem to look at the postings here, but not read them.......

Looks like we all have about the same problem. When I click on the Microsoft Word icon I get the following: Office\Winword. exe is not a valid Win32 application. I cannot reinstall Word because the program was in my computer when I purchased it and I have no CD. I also have downloaded WinZip (I think I have deleted it though)and Microsoft Word Viewer, which I still have. Could Word Viewer be the problem? ANY help would be appreciated as I cannot get to any of my .doc files even with Word Viewer. Please e-mail me at MDM1937@AOL.com if you have any suggestions.
Margaret

Not a complete fix, but I'm sure this will solve a lot of your problems.
1. ANY FILE in the program, download, origCD or burntCD that was ever copied from a 16bit proprietary CD-ROM Reader is for the most part NOT WIDELY USABLE OR COOPERATIVE. This has and will continue to cause an "invalid WIN32 application" error.
2. Also, any file copied, any CD Manufactured or burnt while the operating system was running 16bit realmode drivers may cause an "invalid WIN32 application" error. MAKE SURE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY IDE ARE RUNNING 32BIT BEFORE COPYING OR BURNING.
3. If the system you are trying to install to is experiencing any of the problems from item 2, above, MAKE SURE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY IDE ARE RUNNING 32BIT BEFORE COPYING OR INSTALLING.
4. If the machine that made the file, program, cd OR the machine you are installing to, have drives that are connected to the motherboard through a soundcard or other controller card may also be a cause of the "invalid WIN32 application" error.

Hope this helps.

I kinda have the same problem. I installed Linux cause I was getting bored with Windows 98. But too many things had more to be desired with hardware compatability etc so I reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows 98 SE. Everything went fine. But I had a few registry problems etc & started again from scratch, after installing W98SE about 6 times, My CDROM started acting up giving me the same error as you are getting, & not recognizing alot of CDs even mistaking some as audio CDs!! I have worked around some of this problem by adding a second hard drive, a small one, 196 MB to backup some of the things I can't install from CDROM. I have the luxury of 2 computers & the things the CDROM says is not a Valid Win 32 can be installed by splitting up using splice it & transferred via 3 1/2 floppy disc from another computer. Putting those programs on another harddrive makes it easy to install them, even if C:\ is reformatted. I'm sure it is also possible to interface computers to transfer the programs needed as well.
If you have figured out The win 32 problem, please let me know, cause I'd really like to get things back to normal, it is irritating having less than perfection, as I'm sure you know.
Thanks!!
Brian..

Here is the real answer for all you lost souls for the last year and a half.

Error Message: "Setup.exe is not a valid Win32 Application."

Device drivers (software that controls hardware such as your printer) and other applications that load automatically in Windows (for example, screen savers and virus protection utilities) can generate this error message. To avoid this problem, restart your computer in Safe Mode, then install your program.

Note: In order for your CD ROM drive to function in safe mode, its device driver must load at startup. Please obtain "real mode" CD ROM drivers from your hardware manufacturer (look for diskettes that came with your computer, or check the manufacturer's website). Once installed, these drivers will allow you to read CD ROM discs even when Windows is not working.

For Windows 95 users:

Select Start, Shut Down, Restart.
When you see the message, "Starting Windows 95" press the F8 key.
Choose Safe Mode from the Windows startup menu. Do not select Safe Mode with Network Support.
Click OK in the Desktop dialog box that indicates Windows 95 is running in Safe Mode.
If "Safe Mode" does not appear in the lower right corner of your Windows Desktop, repeat steps 1 through 4.
Install your new software program.
When you have finished installation and verified that your program is functioning properly, restart Windows in normal mode.
For Windows 98 users:

Click Start, Run, then enter msconfig in the Open field and click OK.
Click the General tab, then select Diagnostic Startup- Interactively Load Device Drivers and Software.
Click OK, then click Yes in the Systems Setting Change dialog box to restart windows.
Choose option 3, Safe Mode, from the Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu, then press the ENTER key.
Click OK when you see the message that says, "Windows 98 is running in Safe Mode."
Install your new software program.
When you have finished installation and verified that your program is functioning properly, restart Windows in normal mode.

Using Windows 95/98

Select Start, Shut Down, Restart and click OK.
While your computer is restarting, press and hold the F8 key for Windows 95 and the CTRL key for Windows 98.
From the Start Up Menu, select Command Prompt Only.
On the Command Prompt type win/D:M and press the ENTER key . You should see: C:\win/D:M on your monitor.
When restarting in Safe Mode, you should see "SAFE MODE" on each corner of the screen. If not, please repeat the steps.

Our File Number 1008/Windows 98/Error Messages/Cdsetup.exe is not a valid Win32 Application.

I tried all that has been written, but nothing worked until I changed the setup.exe file to setup.zip, and then opened it up. It then gave me the correct setup.exe file, which actually looked like an installer should anyway.

But could you explain exactly how you "changed" the .exe file to a .zip file?
