Here's a guess:

Extract VSHIELD.vxd(?) from the installation disk and replace the old copy.

It sounds like your McAfee anti-virus software has been corrupted. 'Vshield' is at the heart of the McAfee system. Try uninstalling McAfee then reboot, If the problem has gone, you should then be able to re-install McAfee.
