hello

My 13 year old daughter's computer received a virus. Panda anti virus auto scan detected the virus, I let the scan finish over night. Well, I didn't tell my wife I was running the scan. She got up this AM to check news on the net. She hit the on button like she always does ---invalid system disk.

I have tried booting to CD but 98 wants to format. Also have done sys c:

Any ideas to get this thing going. If I have to format and reload, it won't be the worst thing as the hard drive needs a good cleaning from old games etc.

thanx

Tom C.

Is there a floppy in the floppy drive. Sometimes this error comes when there is a floppy in the drive.

Try Reinstalling windows.

Hi Helper

I wish there was a floppy in the drive. I can reinstall that's easy. But 98 wants to format first, meaning all data lost.

thanks

keep thinking

Hi Tom,

What is the message that is shown saying you must reformat?

When do you get the message?

If you boot from a floppy can you do a "dir" command on the c drive?

Do you see any files? If so, you may just need to a scanreg /restore or a fdsik /mbr or both.

Do the fdisk /mbr first if you have a choice.

Hi Mesich

When I boot to CD this is basically what it says: Inorder to install windows, hard drive has to be configured, all data will be lost.

Hi Larry
I'm going to try what you suggested.

Hi Tom,

Try as Larry stated using the dir command at C:\>

Do you see the Windows directory and the system files?

Hi Mesich

That is kind of the root of the problem I can't get into C: for that command.

thanx

Try another bootdisk and perform the sys c: command using it.

Bootdisk

Just a reminder... Do not download directly to the floppy. Download to the hard drive and the select the download and it will extract the files to the floppy.

Does the bios correctly identify the hard drive?

Hey Messich

Bios read correct, boot disk also worked. Got into C: As I said system is my 13 year old daughters decided to do a clean install. This drive had 5 or 6 years of junk, moved to different systems and copied from drive to drive. Done well lasting this long.

Thinking of putting 2000 on her system, as I think hers is the weakpoint of my XP/98 network. Any thoughts? (I know your a 98 guy)

Anyways thanks for your help

Thanks Larry and Helper

Hi Tom,

Not really a Win98 guy, you buy that? :)

I happen to be a little more knowledgable with Win98 than the other operating systems.
Currently I am using WinXP, of course this machine does have Win98 on it also. :)

My personal preference would be WinXP over Win2000 for home use. Just my opinion. I believe it depends on what the computer is going to be used for and what the user is most comfortable with.

Win98 cannot handle all of the programs I currently have opened and I get low on resources to the point of where I have to shutdown. I loaded WinXP and do not have any problems running all the programs as it does handle system resources much differently than Win98.

I setup a network for one of my biggest clients where all the computers where running Win98. Installed a server with Windows Server 2000. I am going to upgrade all of the work stations to XP next week.

I liked 2000 once I got used to it. I have been visiting the WinXP forum quite often here lately to get up to snuff of it.

If you got Win2000 toss it on.

Best Regards,
Mesich
