I get the error 'invalid system disk' at boot up. Although I've rotated the boot sequence from fd/hd & vice versa, I cannot access the c prompt. This laptop was running Win 95 just fine when I bought it. This error started after I formated the hard drive. What could be the problem?
Please advise

The problem is you formatted the hard drive. There is nothing on it now!! What exactly are you trying to do??

I have the same problem. I want to put Windows 95 back onto the C drive. I only formatted it because it would not boot up without a boot disk, the command interpreter config was incorrect, himem.sys missing. Just a lot of problems! I would like to reinstall. Tell me how.

1. insert boot floppy (with properly configured CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and CD-ROM DOS drivers, or download one from bootdisk.com) in drive.
2. boot PC; insert Win95 CD.
3. at the A:\ prompt, change to the CD-ROM drive (for example, type D: and hit enter).
4. at the D:\ prompt, type SETUP, hit enter.
5. that should do it

Everybody's talking about formatting, but nobody mentions transferring system files. Boot from a bootdisk, and at the A:> prompt, type SYS C: You may have to reboot (I can't remember for sure.) This should solve your problem.

Hi Dave357,
Bone is exactly right! Sys c:\ will only copy system files to the drive but will not resolve the problem. What you need to do to re-install Win95 is this:
1. Make a CD-Rom bootable boot disk.
From another Win95 PC insert a blank floppy disk, from the C: prompt type format a:\ /s
This will make the floppy disk bootable, now we have to add ststements and some files to make it see the CD-Rom drive.
from the other Win95 machine copy MSCDEX.exe to the floppy.
Type 'EDIT A:\AUTOEXEC.BAT'
Add the following statement
A:\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD000 /l:e /m:12
'Alt' 'EXIT' and save
Type 'EDIT A:\CONFIG.SYS'
Add the following ststement
DEVICE=A:\FDATACD.SYS /D:MSCD000 /l:e
LASTDRIVE=E'ALT 'EXIT' and save
Copy the fdatacd.sys file (or equivalent cd-rom device driver) to the floppy disk. If you get stuck have a look at a Win98 bootdisk.
This will allow you to boot your PC with CD-Rom drive support. Change to the appropriate
CD-Rom drive letter and type 'SETUP'.Good luck,
Anto.

I got this error trying to use a hard drive that'd had Linux on it. I fdisk'd it using a Win98 boot diskette, removed all partitions, installed a new primary DOS partition, then formatted it. Then I installed Win98 from CD. Everything looked like it was going fine but then I got the error when Win98 was supposed to boot from the hard drive. I assume that Linux (Caldera) had done something to the master boot record on the hard drive, but have been unable to fix the problem. The HD looks fine from fdisk and can be read when booting from floppy, and the Win98 installation didn't complain about it, so I'm at a loss...
TIA, Jeremy
