My neice has a packard bell 486, that was upgraded about a year ago to windows 95, larger hard drive and so on. Anyway when now when the computer boots and just after it has found the keyboard and mouse it comes up with and error message that says "Invalid System Congifuration- run Configuration Utility", then F1 to setup or F2 to continue. F2 gets her into windows and all is well but what is causing the error message? She has loaded nothing new and doesn't believe that she has removed anything either. Is this in the System.ini file that it is looking for something or not finding something. We have tried setting defaults but that doesn't do anything. I somehow believe it to be in the Sysedit part but is there any way you can lead us into what direction. Thanks

Howdy, Most likely being a older system the CMOS battery is dying. There is a little battery that normaly can be replaced with ease that holds the info about the computer in the CMOS when the system is off. Someone also could have changed something in the CMOS causing this error, but being a 486 I would point to the CMOS battery first. I would suggest you to enter setup and check out everything and make sure it all looks correct, if you are unsure about any of the settings, don't change them and take it to a tech, which really isn't worth it being a 486. This is not a problem with any files loading but is caused by either a weak CMOS battery or a incorrect setting in the CMOS if you need more help, e-mail me.

Laters,

Kevin The Tech Dude.

I have an HP Brio which is not an old 486 and I got this message immediately after the computer reset the time (31 Oct time fell back by 1 hour). I don't know if this process has anything to do with it, but nothing new had been installed and suddenly this occurred.

I also get this message. I have had it checked out and the battery isn't dying. Also everything seems to be okay in CMOS. Is there anything else that it may be? Help!!!

check out http://www.phoenix.com/pcuser/BIOS/biosfaq2.htm#Q41

this page directed me to run the CMOS setup utility and find a setting called "Reset configuration data" and choose "yes"

I'll try it tonight when I get home... perhaps y'all oughta try that as well.
