That file get's updated so it would probably be unwise to replace it with the 1999 version from the CD anyway. It is by no means certain that msvcrt.dll is faulty.

Stepping back to simpler things, have you tried IE Repair? If not type this in the Run box and hit Return key:

rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

If you are using IE5 then change 6 to 5

If the Repair doesn't help:

Just in case it is that file, let me know the exact version number of your IE (in IE Help/About). The version number of msvcrt.dll in c:\windows\system would also be useful. It's quite possible I have a suitable file version I could send.

Take care when using SFC, see this:
SFC CAN GET IT WRONG
(go to my collation and WhitPhil's additions).

mich,

If you still would like to replace the file. The 98 one, not one installed by another program.

See if you have the WIN98_63.CAB on your hard drive. Do a search of the drive. If it's there. You can extract one from it. I'll save a little typing ;-) Here is a page to explain. Just 'browse' to the folder the win98_63.cab is in.

Good Luck,

Just to say that msvcrt.dll gets updated with IE versions. Maybe the original will help but my thoughts were to find the one most appropriate to mich's IE. It's always possible that the Repair will ask for a particular version - we shall see.

Thanks Crazy One. I am a new widow who had a systems engineer husband. I have been frustrated by computer viruses, glitches, etc. Hired an IT person to de-virus/scrub the 3 desktops on our home network, but today was trying to put his car on Vehix.com for sale and everytime I tried to get on the Internet, got the exact same message as the original poster. Thank God for Google. I finally googled the exact error message in. This site was the only one which was a perfect hit. And it was Crazy One's understand-able instructions which solved my problem. The MS hits had me putting the Set up disc in, then the CD, etc, etc., very confusing and didn't work. Thank you so much for taking the time to help those of us who can use the computer but have no idea how it works or gets screwed up.

Might now be worth checking Windows Update to see if you have the latest cumulative IE security update, because sometimes putting back old files undoes them.

I have your viruses in mind - it's best to be sure IE isn't letting them in.
