Comment: Hello, I am using Windows 98. Yesterday, when I was running Internet Explorer and reading an offline document and my friends invite me to play brood war (a computer game that utilizes activeX) online. So I started running the game without closing IE. When the game was loading, I alt-tab to desktop and tried to close IE. There was an error dialogue box stating that there was an invalid page fault in kernel32.dll. At first I thought it was just a common error message and I ignored it. However, whenever I close internet explorer now I have the same error message. Also, when I tried to open any folders in window explorer, including the starcraft folder, I get the same error message. The message looks like this: EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 015f:bff7b9f5. Registers: EAX=7fc69e61 CS=015f EIP=bff7b9f5 EFLGS=00010202 EBX=0135ff88 SS=0167 ESP=01320000 EBP=01320024 ECX=01321df8 DS=0167 ESI=00000001 FS=1307 EDX=00000001 ES=0167 EDI=8165a9a8 GS=0000 Bytes at CS:EIP: 56 57 89 65 e8 75 04 33 c0 eb 54 85 c0 74 4b c7 Stack dump: 0135ff88 7fc69e61 00000001 0135ff88 7fc69e61 01321df8 bffc05b4 bff79250 ffffffff 01321e08 bff7ce23 7fc69e61 00000001 7fc63046 7fc69e61 01321e30 Can anyone help me to solve the problem please? Thanks for the great help! VC

Reply: (edit)I had a similar problem when trying to run the trial version of MS Publisher that comes with Office 97. What I found is that Microsoft has documentation that relates to this message. It basically said there is a file called msvcrt40.dll that causes the error if a newer version of the file is already installed on the computer. If the wrong version of Msvcrt40.dll is installed the installation of other programs searches addresses that are incorrect and the programs fail to start. The workaround they give is to rename the file to *.old and do a reinstallation of the trouble causing program.
