Comment:

I have an IBM Thinkpad 760XL that will "crash" at 5-10 times a day with the following message: Explorer caused an invalid page fault in GDI.exe. After that most of the applications I have running will also crash with the same message. Also, I frequently will have Internet Explorer crash with an invalid page fault in dibeng.dll. I have installed the newest video drivers and thinkpad features disks from IBM. My co-worker got a 760XL at the same time I did and has the exact same problem. Any ideas?

I'm getting the same error, but it seems that it is being generated through Netscape when you want to print. Once the error is generated through Netscape, if you try to print from any other program, you get the same error message.

If anyone has any suggestions, please respond. Thanks!

Me too....on a generic AMD K6/2 450. Seems to happen when the computer is left unattended for a while with or without the screensaver on. We come back and there it is with the dreaded blue screen. The exact message I'm getting is in Module GDI.exe at 0005:000020c2. Any clues out there?

I had the same problem, but not just with GDI.exe. It occurred with all kind of programs. I put the harddisk into another pc a there it worked just fine. It looks like there is something wrong with the memory. It can't be the software because I had the error with Win95 as well as with Win98 after a complete format
How is it possible to find out the real cause?

Same here, this Gdi.exe jus pops up all over the place, often causing the computer to shut down, after a series of closeignore/details kinda screens. I tried everything I could think of, including upgrading to Win98 second edition, deleteing anything I could think of, but no luck. I think it has to do with some faulty drivers, which is not compatible with some harwae, but thats just a guess, I have never come up with such a mind-boggling error, and I've seen a lot of them!
g'luck all,
Norm

Hi all,

I was just sufing trying to find a fix for a similar problem and came across this fix for your Explorer problem. Try this link and let me know if it works.

http://www.cinet.net/support/kb/tech/tech13.html

By the way, if anybody knows the fix for "Excel caused a General protection Fault in Module GDI.exe" (Rather than Explorer) I would really appreciate it.

Simple but worked for me: change in the "Display Properties" - "Appearance" all the defined fonts to another (whichever) font.
This system crashed at least 10 times a day..since 2 weeks ago no more crashes..So I think it might work, the problem was propably caused by a corrupt font.

RUNDLL32 caused a general protection fault in module GDI.exe at 0001:0000293e.

I got this message after I tried to print something from Netscape's web site. Even afterwards when I would try to print anything from other programs, I still got this message. What I did was to clear my C:\Windows\temp, C:\Windows\temporary internet files and C:\Windows\cookies. I also cleared my History files. I then shut my computer and printer completely down. Let it set for a couple of minutes, restarted and everything now works fine. It seems to have to do something with Netscape. I was a former user of Netscape but encountered to many issues. I removed it from my system and now only use IE 5. No problems. Even going to Netscape's website seems to cause problems.

The problem is with the printer driver. Try these steps below.

1. Remove the printer driver from your system completely.

2. Reboot the PC without the driver.

3. Re-install the printer driver again (or a compatible driver)
4. Reboot the PC again with the new driver installed.
