This affects my IE 5 and does come up with Windows Explorer from time to time(have to re-set active desktop).
Before reading this (which is a re-post), pleae be aware that I have: 1) used the IE repair utility in ad/delete programs, 2) scanned for spyware/aureate files, 3) done a complete virus scan with latest definitions, removed some TSRs, etc. This problem still persists:
Everytime I go online and load IE5, I get an Invalid Page Fault Error. My system is Win98SE, IBM Aptiva w/128mb RAM, 10gb hdd space free, I run Inoculate IT! antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall. Have run them plus other TSRs along with browsing and Outlook Express without any problems until now. Here is the detailed error message (I have also run Dr. Watson with snapshot and log):
IEXPLORE caused an invalid page fault in

I don't know about that specific error without going through Microsof's site, but do know that running IE5 or 5.5 on Windows SE and using specific video cards at 32bpp color causes crashes online, but not if you run 16bpp colors. And using the active desktop, it might cause a problem in Windows Explorer.
Try lowering your colors to 16bpp and see if it helps. If not, try Microsoft's knowledge base.

Registry damage is a possible cause of the problem. Upgrading IE might repair it. You could also try restarting in ms-dos mode and entering: scanreg /fix
