Subject: Invalid Media Type Reading Drive C
Comment:

I AM RUNNING WIN98 ON A COMPAQ PRESARIO 266. I DEFRAGED THE HARD DRIVE, RAN A UTILITY THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO CLEAN THE REGISTRY, AND WHEN I REBOOT I AM GETTING A
"TYPE THE NAME OF THE COMMAND INTERPERTER {E.G., C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND.COM}
C>"

WHEN I BOOT FROM FLOPPY
{98 START UP DISK}IT STILL WON'T READ THE C: DRIVE. WHEN I TRY IT SAYS INVALID MEDIA TYPE READING DRIVE C: ABORT, RETRY, FAIL?

HOW CAN I BOOT UP WITHOUT HAVING TO FORMAT C AND REINSTALL WIN98 ?

YOUR HELP IS APPRECIATED

It sounds like you hosed the drive.

FDISK, delete all of the partitions, format, and then reinstall Windows.

P.S.: Caps lock is rude and considered "yelling".

Before you FDISK and Format try the following -

FDISK /MBR
SYS C:

This will recreate the Master Boot Record, and transfer the OS to the C drive again.

Check your BIOS settings for the Hard Drive as well...

If you still haven't formatted your drive and are still getting the unexpected 'invalid media type' message you could try to restore the drive using MBRWork. You'll have to use a search engine to find it, but it's supposed to be able to restore drives that got accidently FDISKed
