I have a E machine 300 using W-98. Lately it has been acting crazy, but now it will not boot up unless I use a floppy boot disk or the restore disk. I can get to the A: prompt
ok but when ask for C: i get the message "Invalid drive Specification" I get the same message when I try to restore. Any Help? thanks joe

Try booting up with your Win98 boot disk and type in fdisk. If you get a 'fixed disk not present' message then your hard drive is completly toasted. If you get a menu of four or five options then your drive is working. select option 4, that will show you the presence of partition(s) on the drive. If no partition(s) are on the drive then you will have to create a new one, format the drive, reinstall Windows and your sofware. If fdisk shows partition(s) on the drive delete them, create a new one, reformat the drive, reinsatll Windows and your software.

Go to the web site of the manufacturer of your hard drive and download a diagnostic program. Your drive is probably dead but 'may' be salvageable.

It may possibly be a flat CMOS battery.
