On my old computer I want to have internet in our little guest room. I have cable modem and internet explorer 5.0. it only had 40-bit connection so I upgraded to 128-bit but that didnt help. So my question is when I click on the internet it says it could not get a connection, work offline or try again. I typed winconfig in run and it says my Ethernet adapter is a Ndis Mac layer v1.0 now that is right for a cable modem right?? Because it wont connect!! please help thx. I'll be on and checking about every 10 minutes so Ill respond with any question u have that I forgot to add.

Did you right-click on "Network Neighborhood" on your desktop and click on the "Identification" tab. You should change your Computer Name (first textbox) to whatever your ISP told you to change it to.

Internet connection sharing and Networking are not exactly my area of expertise but I am learning.
1. Are you trying to share the connection between the two machines (98 and XP)?
If so, how are the machines connected?
For example: 98 to XP and XP to modem.
If using this example then you need to install XP's ICS on the 98 machine using the XP CD or a floppy you make on the XP machine.or
2. Do you get no connection when connecting the 98 machine directly to the cable modem?
I believe that the ISP's cable modem will only recognize the ethernet card ID of the machine that was used to originally connect to the ISP.XP also has a built in firewall that may be stopping you. I know nothing about the XP firewall and can not assist in this matter.
Using a router bypasses much of the above problems because the ISP will recognise the router as the connection and the router does not care what is connecting to it.
You should be able to use ICS through the XP machine though.
Here is to hoping some of the above helps and take this advise with a grain of salt as I am not qualified to speak on these matters yet,
Bryan
