I just managed to get my new computer working again by re-installing Windows 98
anyhow I want to get on the internet with it, so installed my BTinternet ADSL, and alcatel to connect to the internet. I then signed in and it connected, I got the two computer icon on my desktop saying connected at 596,000bps, but whenever I click on IE I get page not responding or not loading whatever it says? I have tried to connect to loads of websites but it never loads? I even tried to sign into MSN messenger, but it said it cant detect my connection? Can someone please help?

Just a suggestion: turn off the association of TCP/IP with File and Printer Sharing (Control Panel, Network, TCP/IP dialup - or something like that). This is MS mechanism to prevent your computer being hacked by external sources.

I don't have win98 with me at the moment, but go to Start, Control Panel, Network, then there are something like "TCP/IP dialup", click on that or pressing properties, then there is a section for binding. Uncheck the "File/Printer sharing", press OK, restart computer and retry to connect it again.

Can you ping out at all?
To try this:
Connect to the internet.
Then go to start>>run>>command
Click ok.Type:
ping 209.90.0.4
Some stuff will come up on screen.
Post here the results of Packets sent and Packets received
Now, try:
ping sky.net
Post here packets sent and packets received.
Need to know if you are getting out of the box at all in order to help.

i think you have to configure your internet connection. i did have the same problem;
go to control panel -->network
you'll see several icons , verify that the dial up icon is installing correctly or unistall it.
then you'll have to reinstall it again
click ad--> tcp/ip --> microsoft --> tcp/ip
you may need the win98 cd. after installation complets,reboot. you'll have correct connection.
