Hey, all. I'm about to lose my mind. Seriously. I'm going nuts. I feel like ripping off my face in frustration.
So, let me explain.
I've got a computer with Windows 98 on it, but it's modern in every other way (1GB of RAM, 2.4GHz processor, et cetera). Reason being, an elderly gentleman uses it and only likes Windows 98. This isn't a problem; the computer's operated this way for quite some time and has never had any issues (I've installed all of the necessary Windows patches, including those which let it run with such a powerful setup).
Here's what's bugging me: The internet isn't working. At all. I'm a network technician, and I love computers, and I've done everything I can friggin' think of. Originally, I plugged in another computer's RJ-45 cable and the 'net worked; wonderful. I tossed the old cable and bought a new one. Everything was fine, till about twenty minutes ago. I was the one using the computer when, completely randomly, the internet stopped working again. Nothing was being installed or reinstalled.
I've tried:
Reinstalling all the chipset drivers, several times.
Updating the NIC drivers.
Resetting the 'net browser setting, several times.
Uninstalling and reinstalling all TCP/IP components.
Uninstalling and reinstalling all NIC drivers.
Uninstalling and reinstalling all PCI drivers (bridge, bus, et cetera).Nothing. It just times out. Won't get an IP or anything.
Ideas? I feel like I'm gonna cry.

You did all those repair attempts in 20 minutes?
Are you connecting through an ISP?
You might try running scanreg/restore after exiting to dos or restarting in dos. Choose a registry to restore with a date that precedes the problem. However it's possible the repair attempts may cause a problem since the restored registry will not have their info.
You can also try running LSPFIX. A google search should turn up a download site.

Haven't tried any of that stuff yet, but I will.
Yeah, a lot of that stuff was done very quickly. I'd burned all of the utilities onto a CD-R on another computer to troubleshoot it before. Basically, all of it was done repeatedly; before, and after the new cable was obtained.
I'll post again once I've tried everyone's suggestions.

Tried all of the suggestions, and unfortunately, the 'net still doesn't work. I tried scrapping WinSock2 entirely and reinstalling all the components, but that didn't work. Upon trying to restore an older registry backup, I received the error message, "System Restore Failed". (Or something along those lines; that may not be verbatim, but you get the gist.)
I'm going to assume, at this point, that it's hardware related; it might not be, but I don't know what else to do outside of getting a new network card. I'll pull one out of another machine and test it in there. In the meantime, if anyone has any more suggestions, they're welcome.

Just popped in a spare NetGear card, and sure enough, the 'net's working perfectly. Considering that it was working once before and stopped again, however, I'll post again if the problem repeats itself. Hopefully, that won't happen!
Thanks, all, for your advice.
