I don't have any problems connecting to the internet, but after about 30 min. everything hangs, I can't open any new web pages, I can still scroll the one I have open, but I can't open any new ones, if I try for instance opening Google, after closing the other, a page will come up, but it's blank and says opening www.google.com in the lower left hand corner, but after about 2 minutes of that I lose my internet connection, I can then reconnect and start the whole process all over again. I called my ISP, they of course don't have a problem, I clear out my temp files, temp internet, history, cookies, all that stuff, before and during my surf. I have windows 98, IE5.5, compuserve 7.0 (same problem with CS 6.0) Actiontec 56K external modem. Any Ideas? Thanks.

Are you maintaining the connection icon in the systray even when you can't get a site to come up?

yes I do, up until the point where the screen pops up saying my internet connection has been lost. I just got off the phone with the phone company and CompuServe and of course they both say the problem is with the other.

I interpret your response as meaning that the connect icon is present, until you get the window that says the connection has been lost, then the systray connect icon goes away. Is that correct?

I gotta go for a few hours.. I'll check back later today.

I'd try another ISP as a test. You can create a new dial up connectoid and use an ISP that charges the normal local call charge. You would have to find one that gives you a user logon and password without using the crappy setup CD's. I had this problem big style with an AMR voice modem. With one ISP I couldn't stay on longer than about 15-20 minutes. I changed to another (Virgin) and I could stay on as long as I wanted.
Have you looked in your modem log as to why you are being disconnected? Mine always said that the carrier had been lost, but there is a command you can add to your modem extra settings, to try and help this. This would be S10=255. This should still try to maintain a connection even with a bad carrier.
Is your phone line clear and free from crackles and interference? Try your connection with all other handsets temporarily disconnected and see how you get on with that. I do understand fully your frustration with this problem because I suffered with it for a long time.

sort of, when I connect my little compuserve icon shows a little dot just above it and if you run your mouse over it, it says connection enabled, but a few seconds or a minute after I recieve my disconnect screen the little dot goes away and so does the connection enabled sign, but the icon stays there. I don't think I gave you the exact disconnect message..the top left corner of the box says connection lost...inside the box it reads...your connection to the compuserve service was reset by the remote host...and then something about restarting my computer or changing settings. I called compuserve again and they are now saying I have a bad ram stick because compuserve is only showing 188mb ram instead of 192mb that I have installed, but I told them 4mb are reserved for shared video memory. But they still claim thats the problem. go figure!
