Internet Explorer slows system down

I hva an AMD K6 III 64Mb ram on board and suddenly last week my Internet Explorer 5.0 started to slow my system down which makes browsing impossible. I uninstalled and reinstalled the video adapter (sis 530) but nothing happened. Can anyone help me?

Hi Alex,

If the system runs very slow in internet then note that slow surfing is the result of incorrect settings in the Dial-Up Networking properties for your connection. For example, if you have the Log on to network property enabled when it shouldn't be, that can slow down your Internet log-on quite a bit.

To check the properties for your connection, take the following steps: Double-click on the My Computer icon on your desktop, then double-click on the Dial-Up Networking folder. You'll see a Make New Connection icon and then one icon for each of your existing connections. Right-click on your Internet connection and choose Properties. Next, select the Server Types tab. Here it should be selected to PPP.

If the Log on to network box is checked, uncheck it. This setting tells Dial-Up Networking to log on automatically to the remote server using the user name and password you entered when you started up Windows 98.

This option seems to make the most sense when you want to treat a remote network as an extension of your local network and you also wish to use the same user name and password to log on to both machines. If your Internet user name and password are not the same as the ones you enter when you start up Windows, however, the Log on to Network feature causes a significant unnecessary delay.

Before continuing, review the Allowed Network Protocols section and make sure that only the TCP/IP box is checked. Then choose OK to save your settings. If additional protocols have been checked, that could also slow down your Internet connection.

Also note that the most common cause of hangups & slow internet is an "aggressive" modem which is trying to maintain a connection at speeds which exceed the maximum rate the telephone lines to your home or office will support. If the modem cannot maintain the speed of it's connection due to line noise or other factors, many modems will aggressively hangup or disconnect.

The following procedure allows you to decrease the modem connection speed. Note that decrease the speed to 56k or 33k if the speeds are set to higher than 56K.
1)In control panel click on modems.
2)Click on modem properties .
3)You can decrease the maximum speed here.

Your system may be running slowly for a number of reasons. If a large number of applications are loading as the system starts up, this may be one reason for reduced performance. Another possible cause of the system running with reduced performance may be the presence of anti-virus software or other such drive-scanning software. Since such software constantly accesses the drives and scans files on an almost constant basis, this interferes with the normal operation of the system's other functions and applications. You might test the system after disabling any anti-virus applications. If a large number of applications are open and running simultaneously, this might be another reason for slow performance. In such cases, a system memory upgrade might improve the operation of the system.

If your computer is running slow, you may be able to solve the problem by using the MSCONFIG utility, deleting Temporary files, or performing hard disk maintenance.

MSCONFIG is a utility that allows you to configure which programs will start when you start up the computer. By eliminating selected programs from startup, your computer will have more resources for multitasking. You can still run the programs by accessing them from the Start menu.

To run MSCONFIG, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then Run.
2. Type "msconfig" and press Enter.
3. Click the Startup tab.
4. Clear the checkboxes for programs that you do not want at startup except do not clear the boxes for systray and scanregistry. Systray displays the time and other icons for applications running in the background. Scanregistry makes backup copies of the registry that can be restored if a software installation corrupts the registry.

Other programs that you may not want to uncheck:
LoadPowerProfile (should be listed twice)
Vsecomr.exe Anti-Virus software
VSCom.exe Anti-Virus software
VshWin32Exe (should be listed twice)
McAfee WebScanX
Eaclean
CpqEasyAcc
Em_Exec
Compaqprintray (if you have Compaq Printer)
Compaqsystray
TaskMonitor

McAfee requires the following:
McAfee WebScanX
AvconsoleEXE
VsecomrEXE
Vshwin32EXE
VsStatEXE

5. Click Apply and then click OK.
6. Restart the computer.
7. The desktop may look different and you may lose some functionality depending on what you unchecked. You can either run the programs from the Start menu or you can run MSCONFIG again and add the programs back until you have a balance between running applications and enough resources to smoothly operate your computer.

Deleting Temporary files:
Temporary files are normally deleted when the program is closed. Usually the temporary files are created in C:\Windows\Temp directory. It is recommended to delete these files on a regular basis by following these steps:

1. Double-click the My Computer icon on the Desktop.
2. Double-click the icon for the C: drive.
3. Double-click the Windows folder.
4. Double-click the Temp folder.
5. On the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Edit and then click Select All. All files in this folder should be highlighted.
6. Verify that you are in the C:\Windows\Temp folder.
7. Press the Delete key on the keyboard.
8. Answer Yes to any prompts about deleting files.

NOTE: If you receive a message stating that a particular file cannot be deleted, continue deleting the remaining files until as many files as possible have been deleted.

Hard disk maintenance:
ScanDisk and Disk Defragmenter are the two utilities that should be run on a regular basis. ScanDisk checks for errors on the hard disk drive, while the Disk Defragmenter rearranges the data in contiguous clusters. Clicking Start, Programs, Accessories, and then System Tools accesses both of these utilities.

If you have a problem with either of these utilities not responding, run them in Safe Mode. To restart in Safe Mode, follow these steps:
1. Restart the computer.
2. Press F8 during Startup to access the Startup menu. Ignore any error messages that occur.
3. Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu and press Enter.
4. Click Start, Programs, Accessories, and then System Tools.
5. Choose either ScanDisk or Disk Defragmenter.

Alex, if your IE browser begins ok, but slows down as you browse the web, you are probably experiencing what is called "memory leak". I'm not kidding.
The best way to fix it is to download Ramboost from www.wolffsoftwware.de, unzip and install it, and let it manage your memory to minimize those "memory leaks".
I have put Ramboost to work on both my personal Compaq laptop and my company Compaq laptop, and it makes a world of difference. I am really contemplating putting it on the servers of a control system in one of our plants. They are experiencing "memory leak", requiring re-booting every 3-4 weeks.
Try Ramboost. It'll make a world of difference.
