Subject: Internet Explorer Page Fault Error
Comment:

I am using Windows 98 and installed the Internet Explorer version 6. When I attempt to connect to the internet I get an annoying message that says, " MIcrosoft Internet Exploer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" I then get booted from the internet when I try to send an Error Report. I have tried the repair facility and it doesn't repair the problem. I have then removed the upgrade and tried to reinstall the previous version of Internet Explorer version 5.5. When I attempt to connect to the internet then, I get a page fault error and booted from the internet. I have reinstalled Internet Explorer from the CD provided me by Microsoft with no luck. I have also reinstalled Windows 98 SE. I noticed that my winsock.dll file was changed so I restored the old file without any more luck. Any other ideas?

If there is a complete error message write down the exact message and then repost. With over 47,000 repair articles in the Microsoft database trying to figure what is going on with yours. It wouldn't hurt to give a little system info, and a little modem info as well.
You changed the winsock file from what to what?

The Internet Explorer version 6 doesn;t provide any information that is of help. However the message I get from Internet Explorer version 5.5 is "The program has performed an invalid operation and will be shut down...MS00BE caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 016f:bff7b9f5" I replaced the winsock file from a laptop that I use that has a similar set up. I am using a high speed USB modem from Alcatel and my conmnection is working...but Internet Explorer isn't.
