System:
750 mhx with 160 mb of ram
Win 98 SE
Internet Explorer 5.5

Has anyone had this problem before? When you
click on a link to a website in Internet Explorer, sometimes the window opens minimized. (like a long horizontal rectangle) It's weird.

This problem is intermittent. Sometimes the sites open up just fine, sometimes like described above.

How do you fix this? Why does it happen?

Try this...
When the window opens minimized put your mouse on the corners & drag it to full size
Close it by using File/Close instead of the 'X', windows should open maximized after doing that

I have offered this time tested solution to a few but for some reason nobody likes it.

Someone else(jmatt)passed it on to me in October of 1999 and the only time I ever think about it is when someone wants to know how to resolve the problem of the minimized new window.

So, enjoy or ignore; your option:

Stretching the screen will work until the next time a pop-up ads shows up and that will change it to the new size but if you want a 'more' permanant solution then follow the lengthy but simple instructions below:
I followed the below instructions and I have not had to reset it in about a year and a half.

In a nutshell: Create a shortcut, resize the shortcut, rename the shortcut and store the shortcut.

In detail:
1. Right click on blank area of this or any other web page, Select Create Shortcut.

2. Go to new desk top shortcut and double click on it.

3. Click on the title bar and drag it to the upper most, top left hand corner.

4. Place cursor on the bottom right hand corner (to get the angled double arrows) and drag it to the lower most, bottom right hand corner.

5. Hold down Shift key and close the window by clicking on the X in the top right hand corner.

6. Right click on the shortcut and select rename. Rename it frm2new.htm

7. Drag the new desk top shortcut to C:\Windows\Web and you are done.

Note: On a rare occaision something will cause the New Window to open not maximized again. Simply go to the C:\Windows\Web folder, double click on the frm2new.htm file, stretch it out as explained before and you will be back in business.

Thanks Bryan, I've never read that as a solution before, I'm saving it.
I use Netscape & Opera so never have the problem but read about it often with IE users.

ZTracker00, If none of the previous instructions work try the following compliments of Toni & Brandon-ZDNet

Toni's way seems to work for most people, here it is:
"First right click the IE icon next to the start button, choose Properties, and change it from 'normal' to 'maximized'.

Now open IE...and right click any link and choose OPEN IN NEW WINDOW. This will probably open again very small, so use the mouse to drag the edges of the window until it's the size you want it to be. DON'T click the Maximized button. Once you have it the size you want, close the FIRST window you opened.

Now close the new window you resized.

Reopen IE using the icon at the start button....it will open maximized now. Right click a link and choose open in new window, and it will open the same size you resized it to.

TONI"
I had posted a similiar problem about a yr. ago and it didn't work, but this was my fix:

Instead of maximizing the window from wherever it's located, leave it small, drag it to the center of your desktop. Now, use your pointer to "grab" the edges, and pull the four sides to the size you want. Your browser window should open to that size each time now.

Brandon

Hope this helps.
