Quite often when im using internet explorer it will stop asif the connection is dead. Everything else will work fine and if im playing an internet game it will ping and work fine. When i launch a new window it will say "detecting proxy settings..." and after a few seconds it might start worknig again.
I've reinstalled internet explorer 6 with no luck. ive checked the setting and the proxy server optiobn under the LAN settings is unticked. any ideas?

I can't quite pick up what your saying...I don't understand the problem. HOWEVER, you could run for spyware(adware) and see if you have any of that. Usually they like to mess with internet settings/connection. Goto download.com and look for ad-aware and download it. Run it and delete all your spyware. Also post back with a more detail descript of your problem (if it still happens)
TechQuest

spybot search and destroy is another good program to get rid of spyware. Be sure to update adaware and/or spybot to get newest definitions. If you didnt set up a proxy of some sort...most likely spyware doing it.

ad-aware is also on that site.
good luck

sorry for the poor discription. I've ran ad-aware with no luck, the problem is still there.
basically, when im using internet explorer it will go dead, like the connection is lost. but it doesnt go to the error screen, it just sits on the same page and if i click a link then it wont do anything. Then if i launch a new window during this period in the bottom left corner where it says stuff like "web site found" or "connecting to site 14.55.77.75" or whatever, it says "detecting proxy settings..." I've looked through the options and tried changing the proxy settings around with no luck.

Go to lan settings and uncheck automatically detect settings...this will make the detecting proxy settings disapear..if your lucky it will solve the problem
Good luck!
