Comment: Hi, I have windows 98SE operating system and Internet explorer borwser 6 and all of a sudden, I can connect to the net, butnmy browser closes automatically with the following two errors: charmapx and Dw Is there any way round this? What are they? Is it better for me to just install Netscape and use that instaed? Thanks for your time, I'm a bit of a novice on computers and would very much appreciate any help from anyone at all! P.S. I really can't afford to lose my favourites list, if that complicates matters?

Reply: (edit)I would do as iminuse stated and back up your favorites. DW is spyware, I would download and run Spybot or AdAware and remove it. It may also correct the problem with charmapx, although I am not familiar with it. Good Day! Mesich

Reply: (edit)Markj, DW is spyware and to get rid of it I'd suggest you download, install, read the directions, then update & run Ad-aware 6 from the link below. It's most probably what is causing your problem. Are you sure the other one is "charmapx" and not "charmap.exe"? charmap.exe Microsoft Windows Character Map Utility Helps you find unusual Characters. Here's the link to Ad-aware 6 and it's a Free download. http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ Tufenuf

Reply: (edit)Thanks for all your help, I searched for the Dw thingm and someone had previously recommended to someone to type in MSCONFIG and then the setup tab, and uncheck anything with Dw in it, I did that and it seemed to work. As soon as I get to a friend's commputer I will download and burn onto CD the Adaware thing and see how it goes. The Full Charmapx error I have written out on a later post, if that is any help? Thank you for all your help, it is very much appreciated!

Reply: (edit)I have repeated the information I've found for Dw (through the Run, MSCONFIG, start up thing) and I've found what could be the culprit! Under the "start up" tab, I found the charmapx.exe but it corresponds to "System Startup". This sounds a pretty serious thing to me, though I know pretty much nothing about computers. I'm thinking of unchecking this box to see if the problem goes away, but with a name like System startup I'm a bit reluctant to do this as I don't know how important and what repercussions this will have on my system. Any ideas anyone? I have also downloaded and installed Ad-aware 6.0 on my computer, should I run this before I uncheck this box? Thank you very much for your help, it is very much appreciated!

Reply: (edit)Good news and bad news, I've got rid of the Dw error and the charmapx error, however internet explorer still keeps telling me that it has a problem and closes once I have been connected to the internet. Does this mean that I have to somehow reinstall it? Or should I just try and get my hands on a copy of Netscape? Great job team on solving 2/3rds of my problems, I can't thank you guys enough!

Reply: (edit)Mark, it would be real helpful to have the exact "error message" your now receiving from Internet Explorer, :) To answer your question, yes you can reinstall it, but "repairing it" first would be the next step. The answer most likely lies in that error message...... :)

Reply: (edit)Hi, Thanks for your interest. I've followed what you have suggesed and repaired internet explorer but had no success. I would try and write out the error message information but it is huge, and for some reason I am unable to copy and paste it, maybe I should just admit defeat and hope using another browser like Opera or Netscape will by-pass the problem? ANy comments, help, advice would be appreciated. If you really want me to, I can write out the error message if there is part of it which might be of more help than another part? Thanks for you interest and help, Mark

Reply: (edit)Mark, The info below explains what LOADQM is. Loadqm LoadQM.exe (Microsoft) This task loads the MSN Queue Manager and is installed when you install MSN Explorer or MSN Messenger. LOADQM gobbles up system resources and appears on most end-users’ Task Lists who come to us complaining of low System & User Resources or very slow, "crawling", PCs. In January 2003 this is still one of the worst behaved Microsoft programs ! Recommendation : Disable immediately, or Delete using Starter. Next, reboot your PC and find LOADQM in the C:\WINDOWS folder. Rename it to LOADQM.EXE.OLD as if you do not it will otherwise get put back in your Task List at some stage or other (on some PCs you may need to boot into Safe Mode before you are able to rename LOADQM). I'd recommend that you click Start/Run, type in MSCONFIG click OK and under the Startup tab uncheck LOADQM, click Apply, click OK and restart your computer. This should eliminate that particular error message. Did you run Ad-aware and if you did what were the results and did you remove anything with Ad-aware? Tufenuf

Reply: (edit)Mark, For the time being just follow these instructions to disable LOADQM from running at Startup. I'd recommend that you click Start/Run, type in MSCONFIG click OK and under the Startup tab uncheck LOADQM, click Apply, click OK and restart your computer. This should eliminate that particular error message. There is never a dumb question and there are alot of good people here to help you. This is the only way you'll learn so don't feel like your a bother to anyone. Here's a few suggestions. 1. Make sure you have an Anti-virus Program and update the virus definitions weekly if not more often. 2. If you are using a file sharing program such as Kazaa to download music etc. you're asking for problems as many times this is where you pick up the Adware/Spyware crap. 3. Whenever you download any program that gives you a license agreement to accept, read the whole agreement as many times down near the bottom there is a box to either check or uncheck regarding some program that may be bundled with the program you're downloading. Uncheck that box because many times it may be a Adware/Spyware type program (Gator/GAIN is one example and you don't want that crappy program). Is your Internet Explorer able to connect to the Internet or are you using another computer right now? Post back. Now as far as the items you removed using Ad-aware just leave them in Quarantine. They won't hurt anything being there.

As for the internet, I am not able to use my laptop, I have to use my desktop (which won't be possible when I leave for college). I thought I was connected to net, as I heard "internet noises" when I listen to the phone line but I'm unsure if I have to register with my service provider online before anything can happen as I tried to install Netscape and download the programme whilst connected to the internet but with no browser, but Netscape told me I had lost connection when it still sounded like I hadn't! Everything seems a bit of a mess right now so I relaly appreciate you guys sticking with me and helping me out!

Reply: (edit)Mark, Did your laptop start having a problem not being able to connect to the Internet after you ran Ad-aware and removed the Spyware entries? Do you remember whether any of the Spyware entries were named New.Net, New.Dot.Net, or Web Hancer? And is your laptop also running Windows 98 or 98SE and does it have a Floppy Disc Drive and/or a CD Drive the reason being that you may have to download a fix (LSP-FIX - Winsock 2 repair utility) onto your desktop computer and transfer it over to your laptop computer to run it since you can't access the Internet with your laptop. Reply: (edit)Ok team, here goes! I get the error message after I have connected to the internet and I am about to receive the webpage, just as it is about to start loading, the error occurs and the browser window has to close. The problem started before I ran ad-aware and has continued to run. To my knowledge, ad-aware did not remove anything, only quarentine things, though I'm not 100% sure unless you tell me how to check this or what to look for if I run the programme again. I understand my laptop is running Windows 98SE. I have a floppy disk drive, and a cd rom drive, and also a detachable CD burner. It is a Dell Inspiron 5000e. I hope that helps you guys

Reply: (edit)Mark, Open Internet Explorer on the desktop computer, click Tools/Internet Options/Connections tab and copy down the info under that tab, then click the Settings button and copy down that info (user name & password). Note: The password may just show ******* so you would have to actually enter your password on the laptop. Then go to your laptop and see if all the info under the connections tab & the settings are the same. If they aren't change the settings on the laptop so that they correspond to the desktop settings. This is just a guess but maybe the settings on the laptop are incorrect. If they're the same we'll try the next step. Tufenuf

My next step is to have him download LSP-Fix to restore any corrupted Winsock files or registry entries which one of the Spyware Programs screwd up. Even though he had the problem before running Ad-aware it's still a possibility. What's your opinion? Below is the LSP-Fix link if you're interested. http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm Tufenuf

Reply: (edit)Mark, I'm glad to see that your laptop is up and running on the Internet. That newnet culprit has messed up thousands of computers and is one of the worst ones to get rid of. There are most probably still remnants (files & registry entries) on your computer but at least you can now use your laptop to access the Internet so don't worry about those remnants because it requires registry editing and I don't want to get into that. Follow my 3 suggestions in my Response Number 18 above which can help eliminate some future problems. One other thing to do on both your laptop & desktop is this: Open Internet Explorer, click Tools/Internet Options/Advanced tab and under "Browsing" uncheck "Enable Install On Demand {Internet Explorer}" and "Enable Install On Demand {Other}", then click Apply, click OK. Some sites attempt to download garbage programs automatically without you even being aware of it and doing the above will eliminate that from happening. You will still be able to download whatever you wish to with your computers. Messich, Thanks for the kind words.
Have a Great summer, Tufenuf
