Bad news I'm affraid. I too had this error over the weekend after try out AOL v5 free trial. No fix could be found and reinstalling win98 was the only fix that worked. Their is a web site called ask mr dns which may be of some help.

http://www.acmebw.com/cats.htm

If you find a fix and it works PLEASE let me know!

Good luck

make sure you have your win9.x cd handy.
go into control panel, click the network icon you'll probably have protocols with aol after the name. go ahead & select those items that have aol & then remove them. you should only have "dialup adaptor,tcp/ip and client for microsoft windows" in the network configuration tab.
click ok, windoz may start copying files from the cd
when it's done it'll say it needs to restart go ahead and click ok.
when windoz restarts control panel will come up, click on the internet options icon & change the start page on the general tab.

Actually there is a few things you can do to TRY to fix it. make sure that there isnt mulitple copies of wsock32.dll and if its win98 the size of the file needs to be 40kb and win95 needs to be 65kb. Also check the dates of these and make sure they are the latest or correct dates. You can also delete your cookies, tempory files, and history files sometimes they can be corrupt. Also in your internet options under lan setting make sure there isnt a check in the proxy box. Thats usually for lan connections. Also make sure your resources arent to low. Especially if you dont have alot of memory bc sometimes page wont load correctly if your out of memory for your computer to use. Sometime Dns errors can also be caused by data lost sent to your isp this is caused by a drop in your connection. Also check your DNS settings your isp will now all the correct info to put in there if they used these settings. AOL generally uses they own and sometimes also has there own wsock32.dll files.

I have the same error, but i´m using Windows NT Workstation. Only administrator users can navigate normally, ordinary users can not.
I solved the problem assigning administrative privilegies to ordinary users.

I changed some i/o adresses from the intern modem, and now i don't get the error message any more! Every website is now comming up!

In order to access the internet after the error message appears, I have to log off the computer, log on again and I can then access the internet again for awhile. Then I have to repeat the process. Many times a day. Sometimes I cannot access Outlook Express mail as well. Again, the problem is TEMPORARILY solved by logging off the computer and logging on again. This is obviously a POOR solution to the problem but it is the only one I have found that works at all.

I use IE 5.5 and Windows 98. The DNS error message reappears several times a day and is corrected only after logging off and back on the computer. Someone suggested Wsock32.dll might be wrong size, not the latest date, etc. I have Wsock32.dll (40KB), 6-1-98, Wsock32n.dll (26KB), 5-11-98. Also, Winsock.dll (21KB), 6-1-98. And Winsock.dll (8KB)..used with Netcom. I recently installed NortonSystemWorks 2000 and it installed Winsox32.dll (16KB) and Winsox16.dll (5KB).

It seems to me my DNS error messages started occurring after I installed Norton SystemWorks. Is it possible that NortonSystemWorks is the possible source of the problem? Should I uninstall it and see if the problem is still there?

Low resources has also been suggested as a possible cause of the problem, but my resource meter shows no problem with resources.

I'll appreciate your input.

Incidentally, www.teays.net/err_msg3.htm has a discussion by Microsoft of the problem, possible causes and resolutions but I don't see a resolution that fits my case.

I was getting the same problem, but as soon as i replaced the wsock32.dll (220KB in size) with a new one (40 KB) every thing was fine. Then later i came to knew that when i was installing netsonic (a caching software), it was changing wsock32.dll on my pc. I have removed netsonic and wsock32.dll is ok now.

I installed webacceleratior and I got this message. Make sure your proxy LAN setting doesn't have the check in the box. If it does, get rid of it. It works!

I also had this problem. Tried everything mentioned above, I even upgraded from Win 98 SE to Win ME, but nothing worked. But now I finally managed to get it to work again!

This is how I did:

1. Control Panel -> Network -> Configuration Tab -> Remove all network components (adapters, protocols, everything). Don't reboot.

2. Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Setup Tab -> Unmark the Communication check box. Don't reboot.

3. Start regedit. Remove the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2

4. Reboot!

When Windows boots up it should detect your network adapter and so on. Then things are back to normal. Hope this can help you (at least it worked for me)! And, of course, you're doing this on your own risk, so don't blame me if it goes wrong... ;-)

Johan (reply 18),

Thanks a lot. I did see a mention to deleting the Winsock2 registry key in some Microsoft KB article that wasn't even answering the problem.... of course, I tried everything else first, since editing the Registry is quite scary.

Your article was the first mention I found on the net (after looking for hours) of deleting this Registry key, so I went ahead and did it. Looking at a computer that works, the glaring difference between the problematic Registry entry and the newly generated one is as follows.

In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\WinSock2\Parameters\NameSpace_Catalog5\Catalog_Entries\000000000001\Library Path , the bad value was "c:\windows\SYSTEM\wininet.dll" (or something like that), and the good one is "c:\windows\SYSTEM\rnr20.dll" (there are probably other values that need change, so just deleting the whole key is good). Probably the uninstall routines for one of the free isps I had doesn't update the Registry correctly, dereferencing their custom DNS Provider. The last thing I think I did before getting this problem was uninstalling NetZero and AmexOL.

Thanks!!!

Luis
